HYDERABAD – The Telangana Food Safety Department has seized 910 kilograms of suspected adulterated and contaminated ghee during a two-phase special enforcement drive conducted across the state, highlighting growing concerns over food adulteration in dairy products.
The inspections were carried out on July 14 and 15 across Telangana, including an intensive operation in the Hyderabad CURE region conducted in coordination with the Hyderabad Police. The special drive targeted both licensed and unregulated establishments involved in the manufacture and sale of ghee and related dairy products.
Food Safety officials reported that several establishments were suspected of selling ghee adulterated with vegetable fats such as palm oil, vanaspati and coconut oil. Such practices violate the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, which stipulate that ghee must contain a minimum of 99.5 per cent milk fat and not more than 0.5 per cent moisture.
During the statewide inspections:
- A total of 65 establishments were inspected across various districts.
- Food Safety Officers collected 91 samples of ghee and cream for laboratory analysis.
- Notices were issued to five establishments for suspected violations.
In the Hyderabad CURE region:
- Fourteen establishments were inspected.
- Fifteen samples of ghee and cream were collected for testing.
Enforcement teams seized 850 kilograms of suspected adulterated ghee and cream, while an additional 60 kilograms of suspected contaminated products were discarded on the spot. The total quantity of seized and discarded products amounted to 910 kilograms.
Officials stated that further action against the establishments concerned will be initiated after receiving laboratory analysis reports, in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The department reiterated that pure ghee must be prepared exclusively from milk fat. The addition of vegetable oils or fats such as vanaspati and palm oil not only compromises product quality but also constitutes a violation of food safety standards when marketed and sold as ghee.
The special drive reflects the Telangana government’s continued efforts to safeguard consumers against food adulteration and ensure compliance with dairy product standards. Food Safety authorities have indicated that similar inspections are likely to continue as part of ongoing surveillance measures aimed at maintaining the quality and authenticity of dairy products available in the market.
The latest enforcement action serves as a reminder to both consumers and food business operators that strict regulatory standards govern dairy products, particularly premium commodities such as ghee, where adulteration remains a significant food safety concern.
