Tripura Signs Landmark MoU with NDDB to Transform Dairy Cooperative Sector

Strategic Partnership Aims to Boost Milk Production, Strengthen Cooperatives and Improve Farmer Livelihoods.

Agartala, Tripura: In a significant step towards strengthening the dairy sector in Northeast India, the Government of Tripura has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Gomati Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited to modernize and expand the state’s dairy cooperative ecosystem.

Tripura Signs Landmark MoU with NDDB to Transform Dairy Cooperative Sector

The agreement was signed at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala in the presence of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah, Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das, Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia, and senior government officials.

Strengthening Tripura’s Dairy Economy

The partnership is designed to accelerate the development of Tripura’s dairy sector through improved cooperative structures, enhanced milk procurement systems, modern processing infrastructure, and greater support for dairy farmers.

Officials stated that the initiative aligns with the state’s objective of achieving self-sufficiency in milk production while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural households.

The agreement is expected to create a stronger institutional framework for dairy development and improve the efficiency of milk collection, processing, marketing, and distribution across the state.

NDDB’s Expertise to Drive Dairy Growth

The involvement of National Dairy Development Board is expected to bring technical expertise, cooperative management experience, and proven dairy development models to Tripura.

Over the decades, NDDB has played a pivotal role in transforming India’s dairy industry through the White Revolution and the promotion of farmer-owned cooperative institutions.

Under the new arrangement, NDDB is expected to support:

  • Dairy cooperative strengthening
  • Milk procurement network expansion
  • Capacity-building programmes
  • Technical and veterinary support
  • Dairy infrastructure development
  • Market linkage creation
  • Farmer training initiatives

Industry experts believe these interventions can significantly enhance productivity and improve milk quality across the state.

Benefits for Dairy Farmers

Speaking on the occasion, stakeholders emphasized that the agreement would directly benefit thousands of dairy farmers by providing better market access, assured milk procurement, and stronger cooperative support systems.

The initiative is expected to:

  • Increase milk production
  • Improve farmer incomes
  • Strengthen rural livelihoods
  • Promote women’s participation in dairy cooperatives
  • Generate employment opportunities in rural areas

Enhanced cooperative structures are also expected to provide dairy farmers with improved access to animal healthcare, breeding services, feed management practices, and financial support mechanisms.

Government Reaffirms Commitment

Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das described the MoU as a major milestone in Tripura’s dairy development journey.

Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia stated that the collaboration would help build a more robust dairy value chain while contributing to the state’s economic growth.

Both ministers reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of dairy farmers and expanding opportunities within the cooperative sector.

Potential Impact on Northeast Dairy Development

The agreement is particularly significant because dairy development in many northeastern states remains below the national average in terms of milk production, processing infrastructure, and organized procurement systems.

Tripura’s collaboration with NDDB could serve as a model for cooperative-led dairy growth in the region by integrating modern technology, institutional support, and farmer-centric development approaches.

Experts believe the partnership can help reduce dependence on imported dairy products from other states while encouraging local milk production and value addition.

Outlook

The tripartite agreement marks a new chapter in Tripura’s dairy sector development. With NDDB’s technical support, government backing, and cooperative participation, the initiative is expected to strengthen milk production systems, improve farmer incomes, and promote sustainable rural development.

As India continues to focus on enhancing dairy productivity and expanding cooperative networks, Tripura’s latest partnership reflects the growing importance of institutional collaboration in building a resilient and self-reliant dairy economy.

The success of the programme could not only transform the state’s dairy sector but also contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of rural communities across Tripura.
