Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh is stepping up efforts to strengthen its dairy economy by expanding milk cooperative societies, promoting scientific livestock management and attracting private investment into the sector, the state’s Dairy Development Department said on Thursday.

The initiatives have helped create employment opportunities for around 2.25 lakh people, particularly in rural areas, while strengthening the cooperative network across the state.
4,951 Primary Milk Cooperatives Formed
According to Uttar Pradesh Dairy Commissioner Dhanalakshmi K., a total of 4,951 primary milk cooperative societies have been established under the state’s Nand Baba Dugdh Mission.
The initiative is aimed at expanding organised milk procurement and providing rural communities with greater access to markets and dairy-related livelihood opportunities.
The commissioner said around 2.25 lakh people have benefited through employment opportunities associated with the initiative, while 17,994 individuals have received direct benefits.
U.P. Remains India’s Largest Milk-Producing State
The state continues to occupy the top position in India’s milk production.
According to the figures cited by the Dairy Development Department, India produced approximately 248 million tonnes of milk in 2024-25, with Uttar Pradesh contributing 38.8 million tonnes, equivalent to around 16% of the country’s total production.
The state’s large livestock base and extensive network of dairy farmers make the dairy sector an important contributor to rural incomes and employment.
₹28,000 Crore Investment Pipeline
The government also highlighted the growing interest of private and institutional stakeholders in Uttar Pradesh’s dairy sector.
According to Dhanalakshmi K., Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth more than ₹28,000 crore have been signed with stakeholders interested in investing in the state’s dairy industry.

Such investments could support the expansion of milk processing, chilling, value addition, logistics and other components of the dairy value chain.
Dairy Conclave Held Across All 75 Districts
The Dairy Development Department organised a one-day Dairy Conclave-2026 across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh on August 5.
The conclaves focused on creating awareness among farmers and other beneficiaries about government welfare programmes, modern dairy technologies and scientific livestock management practices.
The department also said that regular workshops are being conducted to improve awareness of modern technologies and ensure better implementation of dairy development schemes.
Cooperative Model at the Centre
The state’s approach places dairy cooperatives at the centre of rural economic development, linking farmers with organised milk procurement and markets while creating employment opportunities beyond primary milk production.
With Uttar Pradesh already contributing the largest share of India’s milk output, the expansion of cooperative societies, investment commitments and technology-oriented programmes could help the state move further towards greater milk processing, value addition and higher farmer incomes.
