The integration of sensor technology in dairy farming is rapidly transforming traditional livestock practices, offering farmers real-time insights into animal health, feed quality, water safety and farm conditions.

Devices like temperature humidity index (THI) sensors, gas sensors, water purity meters and grain moisture meters are empowering farmers to adopt precision-based approaches—reducing costs, boosting productivity and enhancing animal welfare.

Recognising the growing importance of this digital shift, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) recently organised a hands-on awareness-cum-demonstration camp under the Farmer FIRST Project at Mehal Kalan village.

The initiative, led by Dr Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education; and Dr Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator; aimed to equip dairy farmers with practical knowledge on using sensor devices effectively.

During the seminar, Dr Amandeep Singh and Dr Gurpreet K Tulla showcased tools such as THI sensors to monitor climatic stress, TDS meters to ensure water purity and gas sensors to detect harmful emissions like methane and carbon monoxide. The experts emphasised how real-time data from these devices could alert farmers about disease symptoms, optimise feed schedules and improve reproductive outcomes—ultimately enhancing milk yield and profitability.

To encourage hands-on learning, sensor equipment was installed in nine dairy farms, with data being collected over the next 30 days. Based on the findings, farmers would receive tailored advisories on reducing THI levels, controlling noxious gases and improving feed storage.

By bridging traditional farming with technology, the camp illustrated how the GADVASU is leading a smart agricultural revolution in Punjab—fostering sustainability, efficiency and innovation at the grassroots level.
