Established by the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd., which owns the Aavin brand, the 60-tonne plant is being set up with NABARD Rural Infrastructure Development Fund 2022-23.
Official sources said the plant was coming up on a sprawling area measuring around 8,000 square metres. Construction work is apace at the project site with nearly 35% of the work having been completed till now. The plant would be a seven-storey structure and equipped with advanced machinery required for skimmed milk powder manufacture. The sources said the construction work was expected to be completed by August 2025. The plant would be an advanced unit coming under the Tiruchi District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd

About 10 lakh litres of milk is procured from various cooperative societies daily functioning in districts, including Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Karur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. Of this, around 4.39 lakh litres of milk is sold. The surplus milk would be converted into milk powder and other milk products at the plant, the sources said.
At present, milk powder plants was in operation at Erode (10 tonnes), Madurai (10 tonnes), Tiruvannamalai (20 tonnes) and Salem (10 tonnes). The upcoming Padalur milk powder plant will be bigger in respect of capacity with advanced machinery than the other existing plants, the sources added.
Perambalur District Collector Grace Pachuau visited the project site at Padalur on Thursday and ascertained from the officials the extent of progress made in the plant construction work.
