Maharashtra FDA steps up crackdown under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe; samples sent for laboratory testing

PUNE: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized approximately 10 tonnes of suspected fake paneer and 5,000 kg of suspected adulterated khoya during a raid in Pune’s Shukrawar Peth area, as the state’s crackdown on food adulteration intensifies.

The operation was conducted as part of the wider enforcement drive being led by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, targeting the manufacture, storage and distribution of spurious food products across Maharashtra.

Suspected interstate supply network under scanner

According to officials, the seized dairy products are suspected to have originated in Karnataka and were being distributed on a large scale across Maharashtra.

The supplier allegedly involved in the operation was described by officials as a major distributor operating in the state, raising concerns over an organised interstate supply chain for suspected adulterated dairy products.

During the raid, FDA teams recovered large quantities of paneer stored in red crates and sacks labelled “medium fat paneer”, along with substantial quantities of khoya.

Officials continued inspections at the premises while collecting samples from the seized products for laboratory analysis.

Laboratory reports to determine further action

The FDA has sent samples of the seized paneer and khoya for testing.

Officials said further legal action, including possible criminal proceedings against those responsible, would depend on the laboratory findings establishing whether the products were adulterated or otherwise in violation of food-safety regulations.

The distinction is significant: while the scale and circumstances of the seizure have raised serious concerns, the final determination regarding adulteration will rest on the laboratory reports.

Growing concern over fake dairy products

Fake paneer and adulterated khoya have emerged as recurring food-safety concerns, particularly during periods of high consumer demand.

Spurious dairy products can be produced using a range of non-standard ingredients and substitutes to replicate the appearance, texture or functional properties of genuine dairy products.

Food-safety authorities have repeatedly warned consumers and food businesses about the potential risks associated with products containing undeclared or unauthorised ingredients.

Festive demand raises surveillance concerns

The Pune seizure comes at a time when authorities are increasing scrutiny of dairy products and traditional sweets ahead of periods of high demand.

Paneer and khoya are widely used in restaurants, catering operations and sweet manufacturing. Any large-scale circulation of adulterated material can therefore affect multiple stages of the food supply chain.

The discovery of both paneer and khoya in significant quantities has also raised questions about the scale of the distribution network and whether similar consignments could have reached other markets.

Enforcement drive expands across Maharashtra

The Pune operation is part of a broader enforcement campaign by Maharashtra FDA against spurious and adulterated food products.

Authorities are expected to continue inspections of manufacturing, storage and distribution facilities, particularly those supplying high-demand food commodities.

The latest seizure also underlines the importance of traceability, laboratory testing and interstate coordination in tackling suspected adulteration.
