Nitin Gadkari calls dairy key to socio-economic transformation of region
Nagpur/Dharani: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday inaugurated a 2,000-litre bulk milk cooler at Dharani in Melghat, marking a significant step toward strengthening dairy infrastructure in the tribal belt.

Addressing the gathering via video conferencing, Gadkari said the new facility would provide fresh momentum to milk production, generate local employment, and improve income prospects for farmers in the region.
The bulk milk cooler is expected to streamline milk collection and prevent spoilage — a persistent challenge in remote and forested pockets of Melghat.
“Dairy development is essential for the socio-economic progress of Melghat, as the region requires sustained livelihood support,” Gadkari said, adding that multiple initiatives are underway to enhance rural employment and improve health indicators.
Focus on Fodder and Productivity
Highlighting the importance of fodder management, the minister recommended cultivation of Napier grass and maize, along with silage preparation to ensure year-round availability of green fodder. He noted that improved feed management would directly increase milk production and farmers’ profits.

Gadkari also stressed the need for enhanced veterinary services, scientific cowshed management, and adoption of advanced breeding technologies such as embryo transfer to improve productivity.
He set an ambitious target of achieving 1 lakh litres of milk production from Melghat.
₹550-Crore Dairy Project in Nagpur
The minister referred to an upcoming ₹550-crore dairy project in Nagpur, under which milk will be procured from Vidarbha and Marathwada regions for processing into value-added products such as paneer, cheese, and ice cream.
Addressing Malnutrition Through ‘Shishu Sanjeevani’
On the social development front, the ‘Shishu Sanjeevani’ programme aimed at children aged 3 to 6 years and those enrolled in anganwadis was launched in 50 villages. The programme is slated for expansion to 320 villages, focusing on combating malnutrition in the region.
Dignitaries Present
The inauguration ceremony and milk producers’ meet were attended by Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Managing Director CP Devanand, Marathvarhad Milk Producer Company President Varsha Chavan, along with representatives from Sampoorna Bambu Kendra and social worker Dr Ravi Kolhe, among others.
With the introduction of the bulk milk cooling facility and broader dairy initiatives, the government is positioning dairy development as a cornerstone for economic upliftment and nutritional improvement in Melghat — a region long in need of sustained livelihood support.
