Solar-Powered Milk Chillers Boost Income and Cut Waste for Women Dairy Farmers in Rajasthan

Women dairy farmers in Rajasthan’s Sirohi district are seeing higher incomes and lower milk spoilage thanks to newly installed solar-powered milk chillers, a solution built to withstand extreme heat and unreliable electricity.

Supported by WWF India, the project enables immediate cooling at village collection points, dropping milk temperature from 35°C to 4–6°C within minutes. This rapid chilling prevents spoilage that previously occurred during long transport times and lack of cold storage.

Before the intervention, farmers relied on metal cans and often lost income due to milk going sour. Now, with spoilage sharply reduced, earnings have become more reliable.

The chillers are installed through the Asha Mahila Milk Producer Company Limited, a women-led cooperative that started in 2016 with just 11 members and has grown to 50,000 women across 1,100 villages, collecting around 150,000 litres of milk daily.

WWF funded the chillers, while local dairy centres provided infrastructure like secure rooms and wiring. The systems also include thermal backup, ensuring cooling continues even when sunlight is limited.

Early results show improved MBRT scores and easier access to premium commercial markets. Farmers report greater confidence in supplying more milk, supported by direct digital payments and increased participation in decision-making.

WWF India has already deployed 100+ renewable-energy-powered chillers across five states, totalling 851 kW of solar capacity, as part of its cold-chain sustainability programme.

Local operators say the next steps include expanding storage capacity and ensuring long-term maintenance support. The model is now being considered for wider rollout across more districts, demonstrating how decentralised solar technology can strengthen rural economies—especially for women farmers—while boosting climate resilience.
