The new facility includes:

  • A pasteurised milk production unit
  • Modernised yogurt and butter processing lines

The project is expected to generate 139 direct jobs, contributing to local employment and rural economic development.

Strengthening Dairy Supply Chain

The plant has been developed under the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s programme to boost food processing industries and enhance national food security.

Speaking at the inauguration, Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mazzour highlighted the strength of the cooperative model, calling it a system built on unity, resilience, and farmer participation.

Extralait’s network reflects this approach:

  • Nearly 12,000 small-scale dairy farmers
  • Spread across 44 cooperatives
  • Supported by 57 milk collection centres

Modernisation and Diversification Strategy

According to Youssef Lakbida, the investment aims to:

  • Increase production capacity
  • Modernise processing infrastructure
  • Diversify dairy product offerings

This aligns with Morocco’s broader push to upgrade its agri-processing sector and improve competitiveness.

Cooperative Sector on the Rise

Morocco’s cooperative ecosystem has expanded rapidly in recent years:

  • Total cooperatives reached 27,262
  • Over 563,000 members (cooperators)
  • Agriculture dominates with 17,582 cooperatives

This growth highlights the central role of cooperatives in driving inclusive rural development and food system resilience.

A Model for Sustainable Dairy Growth

The Extralait plant underscores how cooperative-driven investments can:

  • Strengthen supply chains
  • Improve farmer incomes
  • Meet international quality standards
  • Create local employment

Bottom line:
Morocco isn’t just adding a dairy plant—it’s reinforcing a cooperative ecosystem that connects thousands of small farmers to modern markets, turning local milk into national economic strength.
