Indore : Food Safety Administration officials in Indore have seized 1,816 kg of suspected dairy analogues and non-milk dairy substitutes worth approximately ₹4.72 lakh during inspections across processing and retail establishments.
The enforcement drive follows Madhya Pradesh’s recent prohibition on the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of analogue or imitation dairy products, aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring that products sold as dairy foods meet food-safety requirements.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the state would discourage and prohibit the sale of analogue paneer and instead focus on strengthening its dairy sector and promoting products made from natural milk.
“We will not promote activities such as the sale of analogue paneer,” Yadav said.
450 kg suspected paneer seized at Umapati Industries
At Umapati Industries in Palda, officials reported unhygienic conditions, inadequate drainage and poorly organised storage. The establishment also reportedly failed to produce required laboratory testing reports related to water quality and nutritional claims.
The inspection team seized 450 kg of suspected low-fat paneer valued at ₹1.17 lakh. Operations at the manufacturing unit were ordered to remain suspended until the required compliance standards are met.
Paneer and mawa products seized from other establishments
Officials also inspected Narayan Dairy in Mhow, where three samples were collected and 350 kg of paneer valued at ₹1.05 lakh was seized on suspicion that it could be a synthetic dairy analogue.
At Mohni Mawa Bhandar in Nanda Nagar, authorities confiscated 716 kg of sweet mawa and related products worth around ₹2 lakh.
Another 300 kg of sweet mawa and milk cake valued at ₹50,000 was seized from Shri Balaji Trading on Bholaram Ustad Marg.
Samples sent for laboratory testing
Food safety teams collected samples of paneer, mawa and milk cake from several establishments. The samples have been sent to state food testing laboratories for detailed analysis to determine whether they comply with applicable food-safety and compositional standards.
The operation highlights the increasing regulatory focus on analogue dairy products, particularly products marketed in ways that could lead consumers to believe they are made from genuine milk ingredients.
What is analogue paneer?
Analogue paneer is designed to resemble conventional paneer but can contain vegetable fats, starches, emulsifiers and other non-milk ingredients instead of the milk fat and milk proteins characteristic of dairy paneer.

The principal concern for regulators is not simply the existence of an alternative product, but whether consumers are clearly informed about what they are buying.
FSSAI tightens labelling expectations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a public notice on April 22 directing food-service establishments to correctly identify cheese analogues.
The regulator clarified that selling a cheese analogue under the name “paneer” is a serious violation and directed manufacturers to use accurate and unambiguous product names when supplying such products to food businesses.
Why it matters for the dairy sector
The Indore action comes amid a wider push by Indian states to strengthen enforcement against imitation dairy products. For the organised dairy industry, stricter enforcement could help protect the market for genuine milk-based paneer, ghee, butter and other dairy products, while improving consumer confidence.
At the same time, laboratory confirmation will be important before definitively classifying the seized products as adulterated or non-dairy analogues. Seizure on suspicion is an enforcement action; the final product status depends on testing and the applicable legal proceedings.
