Indian Railways Sends First Amul Milk Freight Train to Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu/Srinagar | April 2026 — In a major boost to food logistics and supply chain efficiency, Indian Railways has successfully delivered its first bulk consignment of Amul milk and dairy products to Jammu and Kashmir via rail.

Indian Railways Sends First Amul Milk Freight Train to Jammu & Kashmir

The milestone marks the first-ever large-scale rail shipment of Amul products to the Union Territory, improving access to essential dairy items in the region.

Massive Dairy Consignment Delivered

The special freight train:

  • Comprised 20 BCN wagons
  • Originated from Linch Goods Shed
  • Delivered cargo to:
    • Bari Brahman
    • Anantnag

Each set of 10 wagons carried approximately:

  • 500 tonnes of dairy products

Total cargo included:

  • Toned milk
  • Milk powder
  • Buttermilk
  • Lassi

Faster, Cheaper, More Reliable Supply

Officials said the shift to rail transport will:

  • Ensure steady and reliable supply of dairy products
  • Reduce transportation costs
  • Cut delivery time compared to road transport

This is particularly significant for regions like Kashmir, where logistics challenges often affect supply consistency.

Strategic Supply Chain Upgrade

The initiative reflects a broader effort by Indian Railways to:

  • Strengthen food supply chains to remote areas
  • Reduce reliance on costlier road transport
  • Enhance last-mile connectivity

A Growing Trend in Bulk Freight Movement

This is not the first such initiative:

  • In 2025, Railways transported 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt to Anantnag from Gujarat

The latest dairy shipment further strengthens the rail-based logistics network in the Kashmir Valley.

Industry Impact

According to officials, the direct rail link will:

  • Improve product availability in local markets
  • Benefit consumers through stable pricing
  • Support organized dairy distribution in the region

Outlook

With rising demand for packaged dairy and improved infrastructure, such initiatives could:

  • Expand to regular milk train corridors
  • Strengthen national dairy supply chains
  • Boost integration of cooperative brands like Amul into remote markets

Bottom Line

Milk just got a railway upgrade.
What used to take longer and cost more is now moving faster, cheaper, and at scale—a quiet but powerful shift in India’s dairy logistics game.
