At a time when many youths in Punjab dream of settling abroad and small farmers struggle with shrinking landholdings and rising debts, Amandeep Singh Gill from Ramuwala Kalan village in Moga has emerged as an inspiring example of resilience and self-reliance through dairy farming.

Despite losing his left leg in a tragic road accident, the 38-year-old farmer rebuilt his life through livestock rearing and today earns more from dairy farming than he once earned while working in Lebanon.
Started With One Buffalo, Built a 25-Cattle Dairy Farm
Amandeep Singh Gill began dairy farming in 2019 with just one buffalo and a few cows after years of financial struggle following his accident.
Today, his dairy farm includes:
- Around 25 cattle
- Nearly 15 buffaloes
- Several cows and calves
- Around 13–14 milch animals at any given time
The dairy enterprise is supported by his elder brother, who manages farming activities on the family’s 3.5 acres of land.
Produces Over 1.5 Quintals of Milk Daily
Amandeep currently produces around 1.5 quintals of milk per day, depending on weather conditions.
He supplies milk to Verka cooperative dairy and also sells directly to households.
According to him:
- Buffalo milk fetches nearly Rs 60 per kilogram
- Cow milk earns around Rs 32 per litre
Additional income also comes from the sale of buffalo calves, making dairy farming a sustainable and diversified livelihood model.
Accident Changed His Life
After completing his 10+2 education, Amandeep initially worked in agriculture before moving to Lebanon in 2012, where he worked in factories and construction-related jobs.
He returned to India in 2016 after the birth of his daughter. During a visit to Punjab, he met with a severe road accident while returning from a pilgrimage trip on a tractor. The accident resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.
For nearly three years, he remained focused on treatment and recovery.
“I used to cry thinking about how I would provide a better life and education for my daughters,” he recalled.
Dairy Farming Helped Him Rebuild His Life
Instead of giving up, Amandeep turned toward dairy farming to overcome depression and financial hardship.
Encouraged by acquaintances and supported by family, he gradually expanded his livestock business, especially focusing on Murrah buffalo rearing, which proved highly profitable.
He said:
- He previously earned Rs 70,000–80,000 per month in Lebanon
- Medical expenses after the accident consumed all his savings
- Dairy farming eventually helped him become debt-free
Today, the dairy business comfortably supports:
- His joint family
- Education of his three daughters
- Household expenses and future investments
“My Buffaloes Are Like Family”
Amandeep personally handles almost every activity on the farm, including:
- Feeding animals
- Bathing buffaloes
- Milking operations
- Taking animals to ponds
- Supplying milk to collection centres by motorcycle
Although he uses an artificial limb during social events, he mostly manages daily work using a walking stick.
He says his disability no longer limits his work capacity and credits dairy farming for restoring his confidence and purpose in life.
“My buffaloes are giving me much more than I used to earn in Lebanon,” he said proudly.
Message for Small Farmers
Amandeep Singh Gill believes small farmers must diversify beyond traditional wheat-paddy cultivation to improve income stability.
He encourages farmers to adopt subsidiary occupations such as:
- Dairy farming
- Livestock rearing
- Value-added agriculture activities
According to agriculture experts, dairy farming remains one of the most dependable allied sectors for small and marginal farmers due to:
- Daily cash flow
- Stable demand for milk
- Additional income from livestock breeding
- Better utilisation of small landholdings
Amandeep’s journey now stands as a powerful example of how determination, livestock entrepreneurship and cooperative dairy networks can transform rural livelihoods even under difficult circumstances.
