New Delhi: In a major crackdown on food adulteration, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has uncovered an interstate counterfeit ghee network, seizing more than 6,500 litres of suspected adulterated ghee and raw materials during coordinated raids across Delhi and Haryana.

The operation was carried out by the FSSAI Northern Regional Office under the supervision of Director Devesh Kumar Mahla, IPS, with support from local police authorities and Central Food Safety Officers (CFSOs).
Investigation Triggered by Suspicious Advertisements
The investigation began after FSSAI officials detected digital and print advertisements promoting premium cow ghee and regular ghee products without displaying mandatory licence details and labelling information required under food safety regulations.
Suspecting large-scale food fraud, officials launched a decoy operation by purchasing the products anonymously for laboratory testing.
Samples were analysed at an FSSAI-recognised NABL-accredited laboratory, where the products were found to be non-compliant with prescribed ghee standards. Laboratory reports revealed the presence of vegetable oils and other non-dairy substances in products marketed as pure ghee.
Simultaneous Raids Across Delhi and Haryana
Based on the findings, FSSAI intelligence teams traced the manufacturing and distribution chain and conducted simultaneous enforcement actions on June 17.
In Delhi, officials raided a clandestine manufacturing unit in Dhulsiras village near Dwarka, allegedly linked to an individual identified as Parit Ram. During the operation, authorities seized approximately 1,020 litres of unidentified oil suspected to be used in the production of counterfeit ghee, along with around 1,500 litres of suspected adulterated ghee.
In a parallel operation in Haryana, officials raided M/S Bala Ji Food Products in Sonipat’s Sector 53, Phase V, where more than 4,000 litres of suspected adulterated ghee packaged for commercial distribution were recovered and seized.
All seized materials have been placed under regulatory custody pending further investigation.
FIR Registered, Legal Action Underway
FSSAI confirmed that a formal complaint has been filed with local police authorities, leading to the registration of an FIR against those allegedly involved in the operation.

Officials stated that statutory samples have been collected for detailed analysis and that stringent legal proceedings will be initiated against individuals and entities found guilty of violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The regulator reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards food adulteration, misbranding, and fraudulent food practices that endanger public health.
Consumer Advisory Issued
Following the crackdown, FSSAI urged consumers to exercise caution while purchasing food products. The regulator advised buyers to verify FSSAI licence or registration numbers, examine packaging integrity, check manufacturer details, and avoid products sold at unusually low prices.
Consumers have also been encouraged to report suspected cases of food adulteration through the Food Safety Connect mobile application, the FoSCoS Grievance Redressal Portal, or directly to the FSSAI Northern Regional Office.
Growing Concern Over Food Adulteration
The seizure highlights the continuing challenge of food adulteration in India, particularly in high-demand products such as ghee, edible oils, milk, and dairy products. Experts warn that counterfeit food products not only deceive consumers but can also pose serious health risks if produced using substandard or unapproved ingredients.
FSSAI officials said investigations are ongoing to identify additional suppliers, distributors, and entities linked to the counterfeit ghee network, indicating that further enforcement actions may follow in the coming weeks.
