New Facility to Double Processing Capacity to 5 Lakh Litres Per Day; White Revolution 2.0 Aims to Triple India’s Milk Production

Gandhinagar, Gujarat: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the state-of-the-art automated milk processing and packaging facility of Madhur Dairy Unit-2 at Dashela, Gandhinagar, marking a significant milestone in India’s cooperative dairy sector and reinforcing the vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation).

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi, senior cooperative leaders, dairy sector representatives, and women milk producers associated with dairy cooperative societies.

₹128-Crore Investment to Boost Dairy Processing Capacity

Built across 15 acres with an investment of approximately ₹128 crore, the modern dairy facility has an initial milk processing capacity of 2.5 lakh litres per day, which is planned to be expanded to 5 lakh litres per day in the coming years.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah emphasized that the project is not merely an industrial investment but a major initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of dairy farmers and rural households.

He stated that a substantial share of the profits generated through the cooperative model would directly benefit milk producers, helping strengthen the rural economy and create sustainable income opportunities.

Madhur Dairy’s Remarkable Growth Journey

Established in 1971, Madhur Dairy has evolved into one of Gujarat’s prominent dairy cooperatives.

Shah highlighted the institution’s transformation from collecting only 6,000 litres of milk per day and generating a turnover of merely ₹7,000 during its early years to becoming a major dairy enterprise with an annual turnover of ₹628 crore.

He described Madhur Dairy’s progress as a powerful example of the success of India’s cooperative movement, built upon the legacy of cooperative pioneers such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Tribhuvandas Patel, and Verghese Kurien.

White Revolution 2.0 to Drive Future Growth

Amit Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has embarked on White Revolution 2.0, an ambitious initiative aimed at tripling the country’s milk production over the next decade.

He noted that leading cooperative dairy institutions such as Amul, Banas Dairy, and Mehsana Dairy are increasingly adopting advanced technologies and innovative practices to improve productivity and increase farmer incomes.

Focus on Value-Added Dairy Products

Highlighting future opportunities for the dairy sector, Shah pointed out that cooperative dairies are actively expanding into high-value product categories including:

  • Protein shakes
  • Probiotic curd
  • High-protein beverages
  • Functional dairy foods
  • Nutritional products

He stated that value addition remains one of the most effective ways to improve profitability across the dairy value chain while ensuring greater returns for milk producers.

Women Driving India’s Dairy Economy

A major focus of Shah’s address was the contribution of women to India’s dairy sector.

According to him, approximately 36 lakh women are currently engaged in cooperative dairy activities across Gujarat, collectively handling nearly 3 crore litres of milk daily.

He noted that around ₹200 crore is transferred directly into the bank accounts of women milk producers every day, making dairy cooperatives one of India’s most successful models of women-led rural economic empowerment.

“This is not merely dairy business; it is a nationwide movement for women’s empowerment, self-reliance, and rural prosperity,” Shah remarked.

Technology Reaches Rural Livestock Farmers

The Minister also highlighted the growing role of digital technology in the cooperative dairy sector.

He referred to Sarlaben, the AI-powered digital assistant developed by Amul and launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an international AI summit.

The platform is designed to provide livestock management guidance, dairy advisory services, and technical assistance to rural women and dairy farmers in simple and accessible formats.

Industry experts believe that AI-enabled advisory tools could significantly improve animal health management, productivity, and decision-making at the farm level.

Circular Economy to Increase Dairy Income

Amit Shah further stated that adoption of circular economy principles across the dairy sector could increase farmers’ incomes by nearly 20 percent in the coming years.

These initiatives include:

  • Biogas generation from cattle waste
  • Organic manure production
  • Resource-efficient dairy processing
  • Renewable energy integration
  • Sustainable waste management systems

Such measures are expected to enhance environmental sustainability while creating additional revenue streams for dairy producers.

Strengthening India’s Cooperative Dairy Future

The inauguration of Madhur Dairy Unit-2 represents another important milestone in India’s cooperative dairy development journey. By combining modern processing infrastructure, technological innovation, value-added product development, and farmer-centric cooperative governance, the new facility is expected to enhance milk procurement, create employment opportunities, and improve income generation for thousands of dairy farming families.

As India pursues the goals of White Revolution 2.0, projects such as Madhur Dairy’s expansion are likely to play a critical role in strengthening the country’s dairy value chain and maintaining its position as the world’s largest milk producer.
