Purabi Dairy, NDDB and Suzuki R&D India Join Hands to Set Up Compressed Biogas Plant in Assam

North East Dairy and Foods Limited (Purabi Dairy), National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and Suzuki R&D Centre India Pvt. Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Assam, marking a significant step towards sustainable dairy development, renewable energy, and circular economy practices in Northeast India.

Purabi Dairy, NDDB and Suzuki R&D India Join Hands to Set Up Compressed Biogas Plant in Assam

The MoU was signed on 2 July 2026 in New Delhi in the presence of Toshihiro Suzuki and Dr. Meenesh Shah. The agreement was formally executed by S. Rajeev, Executive Director of NDDB, Satya Brata Bose, Managing Director of NEDFL, and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Director of Suzuki R&D India.

Converting Dairy Waste into Clean Energy

The proposed CBG plant will convert agricultural residues and dairy waste into:

  • Compressed Biogas (CBG) for transport and industrial use.
  • Organic bio-fertiliser for sustainable agriculture.

The initiative is designed to:

  • Reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Promote scientific waste management.
  • Improve soil health through organic manure.
  • Strengthen rural livelihoods and farmer incomes.
  • Advance Assam’s transition towards a circular economy.

Roles of the Partners

Under the collaboration:

  • NDDB will provide technical expertise and institutional support.
  • NEDFL (Purabi Dairy) will implement, operate, and manage the CBG plant while marketing compressed biogas and organic fertilisers.
  • Suzuki R&D India will finance the project and benefit from the carbon credits generated through emission reductions.

Additional Income for Dairy Farmers

The project will create a new revenue stream for dairy and agricultural farmers by purchasing cattle dung and agricultural waste, materials that are often underutilised or disposed of inefficiently.

The organic fertiliser produced as a by-product is expected to support sustainable farming practices, improve soil fertility, and reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers.

Leadership Views

NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah said the North-East, particularly Assam, has strong potential for natural and organic agriculture. He noted that integrating dairy farming with renewable energy production would enhance farmer incomes while promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture.

Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki stated that the company is currently associated with nine biogas projects across India, with two operational plants in Banaskantha, Gujarat. The Assam project further strengthens Suzuki’s commitment to supporting clean energy initiatives in collaboration with the Governments of India and Japan.

NEDFL Managing Director Satya Brata Bose reaffirmed Purabi Dairy’s commitment to making the project a landmark initiative for sustainable development in the Northeast.

Strengthening Assam’s Green Economy

The proposed CBG plant represents an important milestone in integrating dairy development with renewable energy and climate action. By transforming dairy waste into clean fuel and organic fertilisers, the project is expected to contribute to:

  • Renewable energy generation.
  • Cleaner transportation through CBG fuel.
  • Scientific waste utilisation.
  • Climate change mitigation.
  • Sustainable dairy farming.
  • Rural employment and income generation.
  • Organic and environmentally friendly agriculture.

The partnership underscores a shared commitment by NDDB, Purabi Dairy, and Suzuki R&D India to developing innovative, farmer-centric, and environmentally sustainable solutions that benefit the dairy sector, industry, and society while supporting Assam’s long-term green growth objectives.
