₹25-crore dairy plant planned in Kargil; proposed 50,000-LPD facility in Leh and Mother Dairy partnership aim to expand market access.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several dairy infrastructure and cooperative development initiatives in Ladakh, with a focus on strengthening rural livelihoods, expanding milk processing capacity and improving market access for local producers.

In Kargil, Shah laid the foundation stone for a ₹25-crore dairy processing plant with a proposed capacity of 10,000 litres per day (LPD). The facility is expected to support local milk producers, create income opportunities and strengthen the participation of women in the dairy sector.

Digital platform to improve transparency in milk procurement

An Android-based Electronic Milk Collection System (EMCS) application was also launched to improve transparency in dairy procurement operations.

The application is intended to enable milk producers to digitally access and track their milk collection accounts, strengthening information access and accountability within the cooperative system.

The initiative reflects the growing role of digital platforms in improving transparency between dairy cooperatives and their members.

Mother Dairy partnership to expand market access

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ladakh Milk Federation and Mother Dairy is expected to support wider marketing and distribution of dairy products from the region.

The partnership aims to connect Ladakh’s dairy producers with markets beyond the Union Territory, potentially creating additional opportunities for local dairy products and strengthening the regional value chain.

Expansion plans include 50,000-LPD dairy plant in Leh

Shah also announced plans for a larger dairy processing facility in Leh, with a proposed capacity of 50,000 litres per day.

The development is intended to strengthen the region’s milk-processing infrastructure and support future growth in dairy production.

He also highlighted plans to introduce high-yield livestock suited to Ladakh’s climatic conditions. The availability of climate-adapted animals could help improve milk productivity while addressing the challenges associated with dairy farming in high-altitude regions.

Dairy cooperatives and India’s milk production growth

During the programme, Shah highlighted the expansion of India’s dairy sector, stating that national milk production had increased from 146 million tonnes in 2014–15 to approximately 248 million tonnes.

The figure reflects the expansion of India’s milk-production base over the period and the importance of cooperative institutions in connecting producers with organised procurement, processing and marketing systems.

Cooperatives planned for pashmina, organic products and honey

Beyond dairy, Shah said cooperative societies would also be established in Ladakh for pashmina, organic products and honey in the coming days.

The proposed initiatives aim to organise producers, strengthen market linkages and improve opportunities for value addition across the region’s traditional and emerging economic activities.

For Ladakh, expanding cooperative institutions across multiple sectors could provide a framework for improving producer participation and connecting local products with wider markets.
