Dehradun, August 7: The Uttarakhand government has imposed an immediate ban on the manufacture, storage, transportation and sale of substandard and imitation dairy products, including paneer, ghee and butter manufactured using vegetable oils, starches and chemicals instead of genuine milk.
The prohibition has been imposed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, through an order issued by Health Secretary and Commissioner, Food Safety and Drug Administration, Vinay Shankar Pandey.
Products Made Without Genuine Milk Targeted
The order covers dairy products that are marketed as genuine paneer, ghee, butter or other milk products despite being manufactured using non-dairy ingredients and potentially misleading consumers.

Officials said the move is aimed at preventing the circulation of products that fail to meet prescribed food safety and quality requirements.
The government said the decision follows directions from the Chief Minister to ensure the availability of safe, pure and quality food products and protect public health.
Statewide Enforcement Drive
Following the ban, the Food Safety Department will undertake a comprehensive inspection campaign across the state.
The enforcement drive will cover:
- Dairy manufacturing units
- Warehouses and storage facilities
- Wholesale markets
- Retail outlets
- Hotels and restaurants
- Sweet shops
Officials are expected to inspect manufacturing practices, raw materials, product quality, labelling and compliance with food safety requirements during the campaign.
Growing Crackdown on Dairy Adulteration
Uttarakhand’s action comes amid an intensified crackdown on analogue and adulterated dairy products in several Indian states.
Maharashtra and Gujarat have recently taken strong measures against non-dairy dairy substitutes, particularly analogue paneer, as authorities seek to prevent products made with vegetable fats and other substitutes from being passed off as conventional dairy products.
The Uttarakhand government’s latest order reinforces the wider push towards food authenticity, consumer protection and stricter enforcement of dairy quality standards across India’s rapidly expanding dairy market.
