Bhopal Milk Procurement Jumps 38% as Better Farmer Returns, Collection Infrastructure Drive Growth

BHOPAL : Milk procurement by Bhopal Milk Union has increased by nearly 38% over the past year, reaching 3.81 lakh kg per day, as improved farmer returns, assured procurement and expansion of village-level milk collection infrastructure strengthen the cooperative’s procurement network.

Bhopal Milk Procurement Jumps 38% as Better Farmer Returns, Collection Infrastructure Drive Growth

The Bhopal unit’s daily procurement has risen from 2.76 lakh kg to 3.81 lakh kg, while total procurement by Madhya Pradesh Cooperative Dairy Federation (MPCDF), which markets milk and dairy products under the Sanchi brand, has increased from 8.73 lakh kg to 10.50 lakh kg per day.

Better returns strengthen farmer participation

Bhopal Milk Union CEO Pritesh Joshi attributed the increase largely to better returns for milk producers and the expansion of the procurement network.

“Farmers are receiving more remunerative returns for milk and this is helping the network expand,” Joshi said.

The cooperative has also expanded its village-level procurement infrastructure through Bulk Milk Coolers (BMCs), Automatic Milk Collection Units (AMCUs) and dairy milk collection centres.

The infrastructure expansion has made milk collection more convenient for producers while reducing handling time between procurement and chilling.

Officials said improved milk testing facilities and faster chilling have further strengthened farmer confidence in the organised procurement system.

Higher procurement creates new logistics requirements

With procurement volumes rising, Bhopal Milk Union has strengthened its transportation and quality-control infrastructure.

The union has inducted 12 milk tankers, a mobile milk testing laboratory and two electric vehicles for dairy-product distribution. The vehicles were flagged off by NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah in the presence of outgoing MPCDF Managing Director Sanjay Govani and Bhopal Milk Union CEO Pritesh Joshi.

Each of the 12 tankers has a capacity of 5,000 litres, together adding 60,000 litres of milk transportation capacity per trip.

The tankers were procured at a cost of ₹3.40 crore, while the mobile milk testing laboratory cost ₹20 lakh.

According to Joshi, the rise in procurement has increased the need for faster movement of milk from village dairy societies to the processing plant every day.

Mobile laboratory to strengthen adulteration testing

The mobile laboratory will operate under the “Doodh Ka Doodh, Paani Ka Paani” programme and will be used to test milk and dairy products for adulteration.

The facility can test products including milk, curd, paneer, ghee and mawa for adulterants such as starch, urea, maltose, sucrose and neutralisers.

The mobile testing facility has been developed under the Centre’s National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), with 50% central assistance for the laboratory.

The initiative is expected to strengthen quality surveillance closer to the point of milk collection and improve consumer confidence in dairy products.

Electric vehicles and retail expansion

Alongside procurement and testing infrastructure, Bhopal Milk Union has also introduced two electric vehicles for dairy-product distribution, supporting cleaner last-mile logistics.

A Sanchi Smart Parlour has additionally been established at Bhopal Dairy, expanding the brand’s direct retail presence.

The latest developments point to a broader strengthening of the cooperative dairy value chain—from farmer payments and village-level collection to chilling, transportation, quality testing, processing and retail distribution.

The sharp increase in procurement also highlights the importance of matching production growth with adequate cold-chain and transportation capacity. For Bhopal Milk Union, expanding these downstream facilities will be critical to sustaining procurement growth while ensuring timely processing and maintaining milk quality.
