CARDIFF A 33-week pregnant campaigner with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a one-person protest outside Cardiff Market, using the event to criticise dairy farming practices and urge consumers to consider a vegan diet.

Kate Werner, senior campaigns manager at the PETA Foundation and expecting twins, appeared wearing minimal clothing, earrings designed to resemble cattle ear tags, chains around her feet and a milk-pumping bra.

The protest was intended to draw attention to the relationship between lactation and reproduction in dairy cattle and to PETA’s argument that calves are separated from their mothers as part of commercial milk production.

PETA highlights mother-calf separation

Werner said the experience of approaching motherhood had influenced her decision to highlight what she described as the treatment of dairy cows and their calves.

She argued that dairy cows are repeatedly bred to maintain milk production and that calves can be separated from their mothers shortly after birth.

PETA further claims that male calves in dairy systems may enter veal or other meat-production chains, while female calves can be raised as replacement dairy animals.

The organisation is using the campaign to promote veganism and challenge the ethical basis of using animals for food production.

PETA’s wider animal-rights campaign

PETA describes itself as an animal-rights organisation campaigning against the use of animals for food, clothing, experimentation, entertainment and other purposes.

Its campaigns combine public education, research, lobbying, legislation, demonstrations and other forms of public advocacy. The organisation says it promotes non-violence while seeking changes in policies and consumer behaviour.

The Cardiff demonstration is therefore part of a broader campaign strategy in which PETA uses public events to generate discussion about animal welfare and encourage changes in consumer choices.

Campaign against bearskin ceremonial caps

PETA is also campaigning against the use of real bear fur in the ceremonial bearskin caps worn by members of the King’s Guard.

The organisation is calling on the UK Ministry of Defence to replace bearskin with synthetic alternatives.

In a campaign video narrated by actor Stephen Fry, PETA alleges that black bears in Canada are killed by trophy hunters and that their pelts can enter the supply chain for bearskin caps.

The organisation argues that hunting methods can cause prolonged suffering and maintains that synthetic alternatives are available.

PETA says a faux-bear-fur material has been developed that meets the Ministry of Defence’s stated requirements and performs better than real bearskin in certain respects.

The campaign reflects PETA’s wider strategy of combining animal-welfare advocacy with public demonstrations, celebrity participation and consumer-facing campaigns to challenge the use of animals in commercial and institutional practices.
