New Delhi: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) is set to launch a Livestock Insurance Portal in New Delhi on September 28, 2026, as part of efforts to digitise livestock insurance services, improve transparency and strengthen monitoring and claim processing.
The web-based portal will be launched at Chandralok Bhawan, New Delhi. Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj, is scheduled to attend the event as chief guest. Minister of State S.P. Singh Baghel and DAHD Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar are also scheduled to attend.
Digital platform to streamline insurance workflow
The portal is being developed as a digital workflow for livestock insurance under the National Livestock Mission (NLM).
According to government statements, the system is intended to improve transparency, monitoring and claim processing. Proposed functions include online claim tracking, grievance redressal and facilitating timely settlement of eligible claims.

The platform is also expected to provide beneficiaries with online access to information related to registration, insurance coverage and other services associated with livestock protection.
Insurance covers livestock mortality risks
Livestock insurance under the National Livestock Mission provides financial protection against losses arising from the death of insured animals, subject to the applicable scheme conditions.
Eligible livestock includes indigenous and crossbred milch animals, pack animals, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, yak and mithun.
The programme operates under the NLM’s Research and Development, Livestock Insurance, Extension and Innovation sub-mission and is implemented across districts.
Beneficiaries contribute 15% of premium
Under the current framework, beneficiaries contribute 15% of the insurance premium, while the remaining 85% is jointly funded by the Centre and state governments.
Subsidised insurance coverage can extend to up to 10 cattle units per beneficiary household for most eligible livestock categories, with separate limits applicable to pigs and rabbits.
Digital identification may support claim settlement
Government documents have also referred to the potential use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) tagging to improve animal identification and facilitate insurance-related claim settlement.
Digital registration and identification could help create a more structured record of insured animals and support monitoring throughout the insurance lifecycle.
60.80 lakh animals insured under programme
Government data cited for the latest five-year reference period records 60.80 lakh insured animals, while ₹161.07 crore was released under the programme during the same period.
The September 28 launch is expected to provide further details on the portal’s operating mechanism, insurance coverage, beneficiary services and implementation arrangements.
The digital platform marks an effort to bring livestock insurance processes onto a common online interface, with the stated objectives of improving access, transparency, monitoring and claim-related services for livestock owners.
