India’s leading private-sector dairy company plans ₹1,000 crore in capital expenditure to expand milk procurement, processing capacity and distribution as it targets daily milk intake of 5 million litres.

CHENNAI: Hatsun Agro Product Limited (HAP) is targeting revenue growth of up to 50% over the next two financial years, supported by a major capital expenditure programme and expansion of its dairy procurement and distribution network.

Hatsun Agro Targets Up to 50% Revenue Growth Over Next Two Years

According to a report by Reuters, Chairman R. G. Chandramogan said the company plans to invest ₹1,000 crore during the current financial year. The investment is intended to strengthen milk collection infrastructure, expand processing capacity and support the company’s broader growth strategy.

The company had reportedly deployed ₹300–400 crore of the planned investment at the time of the report.

₹1,000-crore investment to strengthen dairy operations

Hatsun Agro plans to allocate a significant portion of its capital expenditure to expanding raw milk procurement infrastructure, with the remaining investment directed towards processing facilities, cold-chain distribution and brand development.

The expansion is expected to support the company’s portfolio of dairy and frozen dessert brands, including Arokya milk, Arun Icecreams and Ibaco, alongside its HAP Daily retail network.

The company is also looking to expand manufacturing capacity for products such as ice cream and fermented dairy foods to serve growing demand across urban and smaller markets.

Daily milk procurement targeted at 5 million litres

Hatsun Agro aims to increase its daily milk procurement from approximately 4.3 million litres to 5 million litres.

Its procurement network includes village-level Hatsun Milk Banks, which connect dairy farmers with milk collection and chilling infrastructure. The company’s model emphasises direct milk procurement and quality assessment at the collection stage.

Automated milk analysers, electronic weighing systems and bulk milk chillers can help improve measurement accuracy, milk handling and traceability. Testing for fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) also supports transparent quality-based milk payments.

Expanding this network would help the company secure additional raw milk supplies to support its growing processing requirements.

Rising milk procurement costs remain a challenge

The expansion comes amid pressure on dairy processors from higher raw milk prices and farm production costs.

Rising expenditure on cattle feed, fodder and animal care can increase milk procurement costs and squeeze processing margins. Dairy companies must therefore balance competitive payments to farmers with efficient plant operations, distribution and product pricing.

According to the supplied report, domestic raw milk prices had risen by around 20–22% over the preceding 15 months. This figure should be read as a reported industry estimate rather than a uniform increase across all regions and milk categories.

Expansion beyond South India

Hatsun Agro has a strong presence in southern India and is seeking to broaden its reach in other markets, including Maharashtra and Odisha.

Geographic expansion could provide access to new customers and distribution channels while increasing the reach of its established brands. However, success will depend on procurement availability, local competition, cold-chain efficiency and consumer demand in each market.

Outlook: Procurement and processing to drive growth

Hatsun Agro’s strategy combines increased milk sourcing, additional processing capacity and wider market access. If implemented successfully, the planned investment could help the company increase production volumes and strengthen its position in India’s branded dairy market.

The targeted revenue growth of up to 50% remains a company objective rather than a guaranteed outcome. Its achievement will depend on execution, raw milk availability, operating costs and demand across the company’s product portfolio.
