The proposed 21-acre integrated dairy hub at Brahmin Majra aims to relocate urban cattle operations, improve livestock management and strengthen sanitation and dairy infrastructure.

Haryana: The Haryana government has sanctioned ₹60.16 crore for the development of an integrated dairy complex at Brahmin Majra village near Ambala Cantonment. The project aims to move dairy operations out of congested urban areas and provide livestock owners with dedicated infrastructure for animal care, waste management and milk handling.

According to the supplied report, the proposed complex will cover approximately 21 acres and is intended to accommodate more than 300 urban dairy operations. The initiative seeks to address longstanding challenges associated with cattle keeping in densely populated neighbourhoods, including manure disposal, drainage problems and sanitation concerns.

Dedicated infrastructure for dairy farmers

The planned complex will include approximately 200 dairy plots of different sizes, allowing livestock owners to manage their herds in a more organised setting.

A proposed 24-hour veterinary hospital will provide access to clinical care, emergency treatment and preventive animal healthcare. Centralised fodder storage and concentrate-feed distribution facilities are also planned to support livestock nutrition and help dairy farmers manage feed requirements.

Access to veterinary services, suitable housing and reliable feed supplies could improve animal welfare and support more consistent milk production.

Focus on manure management and environmental sustainability

Waste management is a key component of the proposed dairy hub. The project reportedly includes a centralised biogas plant designed to process cattle manure and generate renewable energy.

The process could also produce nutrient-rich digestate for agricultural use, supporting the recovery of nutrients from livestock waste.

Other proposed facilities include animal-washing areas, effluent drainage systems, a dedicated electrical substation, LED lighting and green buffer zones.

The supplied report also mentions plans to retender a bridge across the Tangri River to improve access to the complex and facilitate the movement of livestock and fodder. The status and timeline of this connectivity project require confirmation.

Milk chilling and improved handling facilities

The planned complex is also expected to include a milk-chilling facility to improve raw milk handling after collection.

Rapid chilling helps slow bacterial growth and preserve milk quality before processing. When combined with hygienic milking practices, clean storage containers and appropriate transportation, it can strengthen quality control throughout the dairy supply chain.

Testing for milk fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) can support quality-based procurement and transparent payments to producers. The proposed facility could also create opportunities for organised marketing through dairy processors and cooperative networks, subject to confirmed operational arrangements.

Potential benefits for urban planning and dairy development

Relocating dairy operations to a dedicated complex could help municipal authorities address sanitation and drainage concerns while giving livestock owners access to more suitable facilities.

For dairy farmers, shared infrastructure may improve access to veterinary care, feed supplies, milk chilling and organised marketing. However, the project’s long-term success will depend on affordable plot allocation, reliable utilities, effective waste treatment and the participation of existing dairy operators.

If implemented as planned, the Brahmin Majra complex could provide a model for integrating livestock management with urban planning and environmental protection in Haryana’s dairy sector.
