He began his career in dairying at the Government Creamery in Anand, Gujarat, and later joined the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited — now known as Amul.

As Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Dr. Kurien spearheaded Operation Flood, which transformed India into the world’s largest milk producer.

Dr. Kurien has received numerous national and international honors, including:

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award (1963)
  • Padma Shri (1965)
  • Padma Bhushan (1966)
  • Wateler Peace Prize (1986)
  • World Food Prize (1989)
  • Padma Vibhushan (1999)

He also served as:

  • Chairman, Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA)
  • Chairman, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF)
  • Chairman, National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India (NCDFI)

Gouri Salvi is a Mumbai-based freelance journalist. She has worked with Onlooker and Sunday magazines and the Women’s Feature Service.
