Aavin Revives Automatic Milk Vending Machines in Nilgiris to Cut Plastic Waste

Udhagamandalam : Aavin has revived its automatic milk vending initiative in the Nilgiris, launching a new vending machine near the farmers’ market at Charring Cross in Udhagamandalam on Monday. The initiative is aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastic milk sachets and encouraging consumers to purchase milk using reusable containers.

Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru inaugurated the facility and stressed the need to reduce plastic waste generated by milk sachets. The issue is particularly significant in environmentally sensitive tourist destinations such as the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal.

Aavin had informed the Madras High Court earlier this year that it sells more than 60 lakh milk sachets every day across Tamil Nadu. The large volume of discarded sachets has emerged as a major source of plastic pollution, prompting the court to direct Aavin to explore alternatives to conventional sachet-based milk distribution.

The new automatic vending station has been established at an estimated cost of ₹7 lakh. Consumers have been encouraged to bring their own clean milk containers and purchase the required quantity directly from the machine, eliminating the need for disposable sachets.

The vending system offers multiple payment options, including cash, prepaid cards and digital payments. According to the Collector, the machine can identify the denomination of currency notes inserted by consumers and dispense the corresponding quantity of milk. The minimum purchase value has been fixed at ₹10.

From a dairy-distribution perspective, the system represents a shift from the conventional packaged-milk model towards dispensing milk directly into reusable consumer containers. If properly managed, such systems can reduce packaging waste while also providing consumers with greater flexibility in purchasing quantities.

However, the long-term success of the initiative will depend on factors such as machine hygiene, milk temperature control, regular cleaning and sanitisation, calibration, consumer container hygiene and uninterrupted milk quality. Maintaining the cold chain and preventing microbial contamination at the dispensing point will be particularly important for ensuring food safety.

The Collector said that additional vending machines could be installed at other locations across the district depending on consumer response.

The launch also saw the inauguration of Aavin’s mobile sales vehicle, through which consumers can purchase a range of products, including milk, milk powder, ghee, milk sweets, ice cream and biscuits.

The revival of automatic milk vending machines comes at a time when dairy cooperatives are increasingly looking for ways to balance consumer convenience, food safety and environmental sustainability. For Aavin, the Udhagamandalam initiative could serve as a pilot for expanding low-packaging milk distribution to other areas where plastic waste management remains a major concern.
