At a special lecture hosted by ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Dr. Kavya Dashora, Associate Professor at IIT Delhi and a leading expert in AI applications for agriculture, underscored that India’s dairy sector cannot achieve long-term resilience without a full-scale digital and AI-driven overhaul. Her talk, “Digital and AI-Driven Transformation of India’s Dairy Sector: Technologies, Talent and the Road to 2047,” outlined a roadmap for a tech-enabled dairy ecosystem aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

AI & Digital Technologies Reshaping Dairy
Dr. Dashora highlighted how data-centric tools can directly address India’s critical dairy challenges—climate stress, fluctuating milk quality, animal health issues, and inefficiencies in cold-chain logistics. Key technologies include:
- Animal identification & traceability systems
- Wearable and on-animal sensors for health, estrus, rumination, and stress monitoring
- Farm-level IoT devices for environmental and feed management
- AI-based milk quality assessment platforms
- Real-time monitoring and optimisation of cold-chain systems
These tools, she noted, enable predictive decision-making, reduce losses, boost productivity, and ensure consistent quality from farm to consumer.
Talent & Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The Missing Link
A bold message from Dr. Dashora: Technology alone won’t transform Indian dairying—talent will.
She emphasised the urgent need for a digitally skilled dairy workforce trained in:
- AI and machine learning
- Data analytics
- IoT and precision livestock farming
- Automation and robotics in processing
- Digital extension tools for farmers
She called for stronger collaboration between engineers, veterinarians, dairy technologists, data scientists, and field experts to fully integrate AI into research and industry.

NDRI’s Vision: AI at the Core of Viksit Bharat 2047
Presiding over the event, Dr. Dheer Singh, Vice-Chancellor, ICAR–NDRI, reinforced the transformative power of AI for the dairy sector. He highlighted:
- Early disease detection through machine learning
- Optimised resource use and precision feeding
- Predictive, climate-resilient production systems
- Stronger data-driven decision support tools for farmers
Dr. Singh reiterated that AI-enabled dairy systems are essential for India to achieve a sustainable, climate-smart, globally competitive dairy ecosystem by 2047.
