Amul Doubles Chocolate Output, Plans Further Capacity Expansion Amid Strong Demand

Anand: Amul has reported robust growth in its chocolate business, with sales doubling year-on-year during the current quarter, prompting the cooperative to plan another round of capacity expansion as consumer demand for chocolates continues to rise.

Amul Doubles Chocolate Output, Plans Further Capacity Expansion Amid Strong Demand

Speaking on the company’s performance, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), said Amul had doubled its chocolate manufacturing capacity last year, and the expanded facilities are supporting the brand’s rapid growth in the segment.

“We doubled our chocolate manufacturing capacity last year. Our sales growth this quarter is 100% over the previous year, reflecting the strong trust consumers have placed in the Amul brand,” Mehta said.

Amul, which is a leading player in India’s dark chocolate category, said its sugar-free dark chocolate now contributes nearly 10% of its total chocolate sales, highlighting growing consumer demand for healthier and premium chocolate options.

The cooperative is also preparing to expand its nutrition portfolio with the launch of a high-protein chocolate wafer bar, strengthening its presence in the fast-growing functional and protein-based snacking segment.

Mehta noted that cocoa prices have remained stable over the past four to five months after witnessing sharp increases over the previous two years. The improved raw material scenario has encouraged the cooperative to proceed with another phase of manufacturing expansion during the current year.

According to Amit Vyas, Managing Director of Amul Dairy, the cooperative’s chocolate business has witnessed significant growth since the inauguration of its chocolate manufacturing plant at the Tribhuvandas Food Complex, Mogar, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

Following a five-fold expansion in production capacity, the facility reached full utilisation within two years, leading Amul to double its annual chocolate manufacturing capacity to 24,000 metric tonnes.

The broader Indian chocolate industry is also witnessing increased investment. Surat-based Schmitten Luxury Chocolates is expanding its manufacturing capacity by 300 tonnes per month, taking advantage of rising demand, particularly among younger consumers seeking premium and everyday indulgence products.

Industry experts believe stable cocoa prices, increasing premiumisation, and rising demand for healthier confectionery are creating fresh growth opportunities for chocolate manufacturers across India.
