In a landmark global expansion, India’s dairy giant Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the iconic Amul brand, has officially entered the mainstream US retail market through a strategic partnership with Costco Wholesale.
Amul Gold Hits US Shelves
- Amul Gold milk is now available in gallon packs (3.78 litres)
- Initially launched in Costco stores on the US East Coast
- Planned expansion across 750+ Costco outlets nationwide
GCMMF Managing Director Jayen Mehta called it a “proud moment”, marking Amul’s entry into mainstream American retail beyond niche ethnic stores.
From Diaspora to Mainstream Consumers
Until now, Amul products in the US were largely limited to Indian-focused supermarkets. With this move:
- Amul targets both the Indian diaspora and American consumers
- Its 6% fat formulation has gained popularity for its rich taste
- It directly competes with established private labels like Costco’s Kirkland Signature
Backed by Strategic Partnership
Amul’s US journey began earlier this year through collaboration with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA), one of America’s top dairy cooperatives.
- MMPA provides processing infrastructure and technology
- Ensures local production with global branding
- Strengthens supply across multiple US states

Legacy Meets Global Expansion
Amul’s global journey traces back to Verghese Kurien, whose vision transformed India into a dairy powerhouse during the White Revolution. Interestingly, Kurien was an alumnus of Michigan State University, symbolically linking Amul’s roots to its US expansion.
