NEW DELHI : India’s iconic dairy cooperative brand Amul has been recognised as the World’s Strongest Dairy Brand in the latest Brand Finance Food & Drink 2026 study, strengthening India’s position on the global dairy map.

The recognition comes as Amul’s brand value increased 22% to USD 5 billion, while its Brand Strength Index (BSI) score reached 93.0 out of 100, earning the brand an AAA+ rating.
The achievement places Amul among the world’s leading food and dairy brands and highlights the growing global strength of India’s farmer-owned dairy cooperative model.
Amul’s Global Brand Position Strengthens
According to the Brand Finance assessment, Amul has achieved several notable global positions:
- World’s strongest dairy brand
- 2nd strongest food brand globally
- 4th most valuable dairy brand globally
- 13th most valuable food brand globally
- Only Indian brand among the world’s Top 50 food brands
The numbers demonstrate that Amul’s strength extends beyond the Indian dairy market.
Its ability to combine mass-market affordability, consumer trust, product diversification and a farmer-linked supply chain has helped it build a brand with international recognition.
The Farmer Is at the Centre of the Amul Model
What makes the recognition particularly significant is the ownership structure behind the brand.
Amul is marketed by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which operates through a large three-tier cooperative network.
The federation has:
18 member unions → 18,600 village milk cooperative societies → 3.64 million producer members
GCMMF procures approximately 32 million litres of milk every day, connecting millions of milk producers with consumers through a large organised dairy network.
Therefore, the $5-billion brand value is not simply the result of corporate brand building. It is supported by a farmer-owned ecosystem that converts milk collected from millions of producers into a diversified consumer portfolio.
Strong Financial Growth
Amul’s brand strength has been accompanied by significant financial expansion.
GCMMF reported a turnover of ₹65,911 crore in FY2024-25, compared with ₹59,545 crore in FY2023-24.
The federation has also steadily expanded beyond liquid milk.
Its portfolio now covers categories including:
Milk | Ghee | Butter | Cheese | Paneer | Ice Cream | Chocolates | Traditional Sweets | Other Dairy & Food Products
This diversification allows the cooperative to capture greater value from every litre of milk while responding to changing consumer preferences.
From Indian Cooperative to Global Dairy Brand
Amul’s international expansion is another important component of its growth story.
Amul products are currently exported to more than 50 countries.
The cooperative has also expanded its international strategy through initiatives such as fresh milk sales in the United States and market expansion into Spain and Portugal through international cooperative partnerships.

The objective is increasingly broader than simply exporting Indian dairy products.
Amul is attempting to take the Indian farmer-owned cooperative model to international consumers.
Why the Amul Model Matters
The significance of Amul’s latest recognition lies in the unusual combination of farmer ownership and consumer-brand power.
Traditionally, large consumer brands are built around corporate ownership, marketing investment and distribution strength.
Amul represents a different model.
Milk producers form the foundation of the supply chain, while cooperative institutions aggregate milk, process it, develop products, build the brand and connect producers with consumers.
The model can create value at multiple stages:
Farmer → Village Cooperative → Milk Union → GCMMF → Processing & Branding → Distribution → Consumer
This integration has helped Amul build scale while maintaining a strong connection with milk producers.
Trust, Affordability and Innovation Drive Brand Strength
Amul’s continuing brand strength can be linked to several factors.
Consumer trust remains fundamental, particularly in a category where quality and authenticity are critical.
At the same time, the brand has maintained a strong value-for-money positioning, allowing dairy products to reach a broad consumer base.
Amul has also continued to expand its portfolio and enter new categories, helping it remain relevant as consumer preferences change.
The combination of:
Trust + Affordability + Quality + Innovation + Distribution + Farmer Ownership
has become a defining feature of the Amul brand.
A Broader Signal for India’s Dairy Industry
Amul’s global ranking comes at a time when India’s dairy industry is undergoing significant structural change.
Consumers are increasingly moving towards packaged, branded and value-added dairy products, while demand is expanding for products such as cheese, paneer, yogurt, ghee, ice cream and other dairy-based foods.
For Indian dairy companies, the opportunity is therefore shifting from simply increasing milk volumes to extracting greater value from every litre of milk.
Amul’s growth provides a strong example of how procurement scale can be combined with processing, branding, product diversification and international marketing.
From Milk Collection to Global Brand Building
The latest recognition also demonstrates the evolution of India’s cooperative dairy sector.
The original challenge was to organise fragmented milk production and provide farmers with a reliable market.
The next phase involved building processing capacity and a national distribution network.
Today, the objective is increasingly global brand building and value creation.
Amul’s journey can therefore be viewed as:
Milk Procurement → Cooperative Organisation → Processing → National Distribution → Value Addition → Brand Building → Global Expansion
More Than a Brand Award
Amul’s latest Brand Finance recognition represents more than another position in an international ranking.
It demonstrates that a farmer-owned cooperative can build a globally recognised consumer brand at enormous scale.
With a brand value of $5 billion, an AAA+ brand-strength rating, millions of producer members and a rapidly expanding international footprint, Amul is increasingly positioning itself not merely as India’s largest dairy brand but as a significant global dairy player.
