Shopian, April 8: South Kashmir’s Shopian district has recorded significant progress in the animal husbandry sector during 2025–26, with government-backed schemes boosting dairy, poultry, and fodder development under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme.

Dairy Sector Strengthened
Under the dairy development component (P-23), the district has seen targeted infrastructure expansion:
- Establishment of two satellite heifer units
- One milk value addition unit
- Installation of five Automatic Milk Collection Units (AMCUs)
With a financial outlay of ₹104.29 lakh, these interventions aim to improve milk quality, streamline procurement, and enhance farmer incomes.
Poultry Gains Momentum
The poultry sector, known for quick returns, has also expanded under the development roadmap (P-25):
- 17 free-range poultry units established
- Investment of ₹17 lakh
Officials say the focus on low-input, sustainable poultry farming is particularly beneficial for small and marginal farmers.
Focus on Fodder Security
Recognizing feed as a critical constraint, the programme has prioritized fodder development (P-28):
- 3 silage-making units
- 3 hydroponic fodder units
- 4 chaff cutters
- 18 fodder plots
- Distribution of 35 seed kits
With ₹39.96 lakh invested, the initiative aims to ensure consistent availability of quality livestock feed.
Modern Dairy Units and Sustainability
Under the Integrated Dairy Development Scheme (P-30):
- 44 dairy units established
- 3 milking machines distributed
- 2 vermicompost units set up
With an expenditure of ₹75.77 lakh, the scheme promotes modern dairy practices alongside organic waste management.
Production and Breeding Improvements
The combined impact of these efforts is reflected in improved output:
- Milk production reached 75.633 thousand tonnes
- Egg production stood at 5.356 million
Breeding services have also expanded significantly:
- 34,810 artificial inseminations conducted
- Resulting in 9,972 livestock births
Enhanced Animal Healthcare
Veterinary outreach has strengthened across the district:
- 2.29 lakh cattle vaccinations
- 55,800 poultry vaccinations
- 1.77 lakh deworming doses administered
- 67,619 animal treatments carried out
Farmer Awareness and Grassroots Support
A total of 121 awareness camps have been conducted to educate farmers on:
- Disease prevention
- Modern livestock practices
- Scientific dairy and poultry management
Additionally, under the National Livestock Mission (DAJGUA-NLM), three small-scale poultry units (100 birds each) were established with financial support, encouraging grassroots entrepreneurship.

This isn’t just growth in numbers—it’s a shift toward structured, scientific, and sustainable livestock farming in a region where agriculture is the backbone of livelihoods.
