Japanese Beverage Giant Targets India’s Expanding Health and Functional Drinks Market
New Delhi/Tokyo: Japanese beverage major Asahi Group Holdings is set to enter India’s non-alcoholic dairy beverage segment with the launch of its iconic fermented milk-based drink brand, Calpis, through a franchise partnership with Varun Beverages Limited, one of PepsiCo’s largest bottling partners globally.

The move marks Asahi’s first entry into India’s non-alcoholic and non-carbonated beverage market and represents a significant step in the company’s international expansion strategy.
Calpis to Debut in Two Flavours
According to the company, Calpis will be introduced in India during the second half of 2026 or shortly thereafter.
The product will initially be available in two variants:
- Original Calpis
- Mango Calpis
The beverages will be sold in 180 ml bottles and priced at ₹20 per bottle, positioning them as affordable functional dairy beverages targeted at mass-market consumers.
Partnership Structure
Under the franchise agreement:
- Asahi will oversee product formulation, quality standards, and technical support.
- Asahi’s Indian subsidiary will manage marketing and brand development.
- Varun Beverages will handle manufacturing, distribution, and sales operations across India.
The partnership allows Asahi to leverage Varun Beverages’ extensive production and distribution network, which includes 53 manufacturing facilities across India and international markets.
Industry analysts view the collaboration as a strategic approach to rapidly scale operations in one of the world’s fastest-growing beverage markets.
India Offers Major Growth Potential
Asahi highlighted India’s population of more than 1.4 billion and rising consumer spending as key reasons behind the market entry.
The company described India as an “extremely promising market for non-alcohol beverages” driven by:
- Population growth
- Expansion of the middle-income consumer segment
- Rising health awareness
- Increasing demand for functional beverages
Asahi Chief Executive Officer Atsushi Katsuki described India as one of the most dynamic beverage markets globally.
According to industry data cited by Asahi, India’s non-alcoholic beverage market volume expanded approximately 2.3 times between 2015 and 2025, reflecting strong consumer demand across multiple beverage categories.
Opportunity in Functional Dairy Beverages
Calpis occupies a unique position in the global beverage market as a fermented milk drink known for its mildly sweet and tangy taste profile.
The launch comes at a time when Indian consumers are increasingly embracing:
- Probiotic beverages
- Functional dairy drinks
- Gut-health products
- Low-carbonated refreshment beverages
- Nutritional and wellness-focused drinks
The entry of an internationally recognized fermented dairy beverage could further stimulate innovation and competition within India’s growing dairy beverage segment.
Varun Beverages Strengthens Product Portfolio
For Varun Beverages, the partnership expands its portfolio beyond traditional soft drinks and packaged beverages.

The company, widely recognized as PepsiCo’s second-largest franchise bottler outside the United States, continues to diversify into emerging beverage categories that align with changing consumer preferences.
Industry experts believe Varun’s extensive distribution reach could enable Calpis to quickly establish a presence across urban and semi-urban markets.
Global Expansion of Calpis Brand
India is the latest market targeted under Asahi’s broader international growth strategy for the Calpis brand.
In 2025, the company entered a similar partnership in China to expand distribution of Calpis Water through local beverage manufacturer KSF Beverage Holdings.
The company is increasingly focusing on high-growth Asian markets where rising incomes, urbanization, and health-conscious consumption patterns are creating new opportunities for premium and functional beverages.
Outlook
The launch of Calpis in India signals growing international interest in the country’s dairy and functional beverage sector. With strong local manufacturing support, affordable pricing, and increasing consumer demand for health-oriented drinks, Asahi’s latest venture could create a new category of fermented dairy beverages within the Indian market.
As competition intensifies across dairy-based and wellness beverage segments, the success of Calpis will likely be closely watched by both multinational beverage companies and domestic dairy processors seeking to capitalize on India’s rapidly evolving consumer preferences.
