Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: A research team from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been granted an Indian patent for a composite antacid tablet developed using milk protein and aloe vera, marking an innovation at the intersection of dairy science, food technology and functional health products.
The patent, No. 597350, based on application No. 202311057324, was granted by the Patent Office, Government of India. The invention was developed at the Department of Dairy Science and Food Technology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU.
Research team behind the invention
The patented invention was developed by a team comprising Dinesh Chandra Rai, Raj Kumar Duary, Arvind, Ruchi Chawla, Ridhi Pandey and Krishna Kumar.
Rai, who is currently Vice-Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University (BRABU), praised the research team and described the patent as a step towards developing products based on natural and dairy-derived ingredients.
“This patent is one meaningful step in that continuing journey from the dairy farm and the research bench to the daily life of society,” Rai said.
Combining dairy protein with aloe vera
The invention combines milk protein with aloe vera in a composite tablet intended for use as an antacid.
The development highlights a potential avenue for dairy-based value addition, in which milk-derived proteins are incorporated into products beyond conventional food and beverage applications.

Rai said the technology could provide a basis for further clinical validation, scale-up and commercialisation. However, any claims regarding its clinical effectiveness or safety would require appropriate scientific and regulatory evaluation.
Potential for dairy value addition
The patent also highlights the potential for research institutions to explore new applications for dairy-derived ingredients through food and nutritional product development.
According to Rai, the innovation aligns with efforts to promote indigenous research, dairy value addition and evidence-based approaches to traditional knowledge.
The granting of the patent provides intellectual-property protection for the invention, while further research and regulatory processes would be required before any commercial health-product claims can be established.
The development has drawn appreciation from academics and alumni associated with BHU and BRABU, who congratulated Rai and the research team on the patent.
