VIJAYAWADA : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest at Vijaya Dairy in Vijayawada on Tuesday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the recently announced ₹2-per-litre increase in milk prices.
The protest coincided with the assumption of charge by newly appointed Vijaya Dairy Chairman Dasari Balavardhan Rao. CPI(M) leaders arrived at the dairy to submit a memorandum opposing the price increase but were initially stopped by security personnel and police at the main gate.
Protesters Enter Dairy Premises
The attempt to enter the premises led to a brief argument between the protesters and security personnel. The protesters subsequently pushed through the gate and entered the dairy premises, creating tension for some time.
Vijaya Dairy Managing Director Kolli Eswara Babu later spoke with the protesters and agreed to receive their representation for submission to the newly appointed chairman.
The CPI(M) delegation subsequently met Dasari Balavardhan Rao and submitted a memorandum seeking the immediate withdrawal of the ₹2-per-litre price increase.
CPI(M) Says Milk Price Hike Will Add to Household Burden
CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao said households were already facing financial pressure because of rising prices of essential commodities and argued that another increase in milk prices would further increase the burden on consumers.

He said milk was a regular requirement for children, elderly people, pregnant women and patients, and contended that repeated price increases within a short period were difficult for consumers to absorb.
Party Claims Third Price Increase in a Year
CPI(M) leaders claimed that the latest ₹2-per-litre increase was the third milk price increase within a year. They estimated that the cumulative impact of the latest hike would place an additional burden of approximately ₹200 crore on consumers.
The ₹200-crore estimate was presented by the CPI(M) as part of its opposition to the price revision.
CPI(M) Calls for Stronger Cooperative Dairy Model
The party urged the government to strengthen Vijaya Dairy as a cooperative-sector institution rather than relying on repeated price increases to address the dairy’s financial or operational requirements.
CPI(M) leaders called for policies that would provide remunerative prices to milk producers while keeping milk affordable for consumers, highlighting the need to balance farmer income with consumer affordability.
The protest comes as the newly appointed Vijaya Dairy chairman assumes office, with the milk-price revision emerging as an immediate issue raised by opposition groups and consumer-focused political representatives.
