In a significant milestone for Bihar’s dairy industry, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday flagged off export consignments of Sudha Ghee, Gulab Jamun, and Makhana to the United States and Canada, marking a new chapter in the state’s journey toward becoming a major exporter of value-added dairy products.

The export consignments, valued at more than ₹48 lakh, were dispatched from Patna under the banner of Bihar State Milk Co-operative Federation, which markets its products through the widely recognized Sudha brand.
Details of the Export Consignments
According to N. Vijaya Lakshmi, the initial shipment includes:
| Product | Quantity | Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Sudha Ghee | 5,700 kg | USA |
| Makhana | 500 kg | USA |
| Gulab Jamun | 5,000 kg | Canada |
The exports represent one of the most significant recent efforts by Bihar’s dairy cooperative sector to expand into international markets.
Major Achievement for COMFED
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi described the development as a landmark moment for COMFED.
She noted that sustained engagement with export promotion agencies and international market partners helped pave the way for the shipments.
The success demonstrates the growing acceptance of Bihar’s dairy and agri-food products among overseas consumers, particularly within Indian diaspora communities in North America.
Boost for Dairy Farmers and Rural Economy
Industry experts believe the export initiative could create substantial benefits across Bihar’s dairy value chain.
Potential advantages include:
- Higher demand for milk and dairy products.
- Increased income opportunities for dairy farmers.
- Expansion of value-added dairy manufacturing.
- Better market diversification.
- Strengthening of rural livelihoods.
- Greater global visibility for Bihar-made products.
Officials emphasized that stronger exports can help dairy cooperatives generate additional revenue, which can ultimately benefit milk producers associated with the cooperative network.
Sudha’s Growing Presence
Over the years, Sudha has emerged as one of India’s leading cooperative dairy brands, with a strong presence across eastern India. The brand markets a wide range of products including:
- Milk
- Ghee
- Butter
- Paneer
- Curd
- Sweets
- Ice cream
- Dairy beverages
The export of ghee and processed dairy products signals COMFED’s intention to move beyond domestic markets and establish a stronger international footprint.
Why This Matters
For Bihar, which is among India’s rapidly growing milk-producing states, exports represent the next phase of dairy sector development.
Rather than relying solely on liquid milk sales, cooperatives can create higher-value products that command premium prices in international markets.
The inclusion of Makhana, a product strongly associated with Bihar, alongside dairy products also highlights the state’s strategy of promoting agriculture and allied sectors together.
Expert Perspective
For Bihar’s dairy sector, this development is more than a one-time export shipment—it signals the growing capability of cooperative dairies to compete in global markets. If export volumes continue to increase, Bihar could strengthen its position not only as a major milk-producing state but also as an exporter of premium dairy and agri-food products, creating new income streams for thousands of farmers associated with the cooperative movement.
