The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, in collaboration with ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, organised a daylong brainstorming session on “Indian Standards on Test Methods for Dairy Products” at the NDRI campus on Tuesday.

The programme brought together over 50 participants, including scientists, research scholars and members of the Dairy Products Sectional Committee of the Food and Agriculture Department (FAD 19) of BIS, to deliberate on strengthening and updating analytical standards for dairy products.
Focus on Science-Backed Standards
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Dheer Singh, Director, ICAR-NDRI and Chairperson, FAD 19, BIS, underlined the critical role of research and development in framing and revising Indian Standards. He emphasised that standards must comprehensively address the diverse range of dairy products available in the market and be supported by strong scientific evidence and data generation.
Dr Singh also stressed the importance of robust analytical test methods in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and maintaining food quality and safety. He called for continued collaboration between BIS and research institutions to keep Indian Standards current and globally relevant.
Industry and Global Alignment
Suneeti Toteja, Head of the Food and Agriculture Department at BIS, addressed participants virtually and outlined the objectives and expected outcomes of the session. During the technical session, Dr Bhawana, Scientist ‘E’ at BIS, presented an overview of existing Indian Standards on test methods for dairy products.
Aditya Jain, Deputy General Manager at the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), highlighted India’s engagement with international standard-setting bodies such as ISO and the International Dairy Federation (IDF). He emphasised the need to strengthen India’s participation in global dairy standardisation efforts.

Dr Rajeev Chawla, General Manager at the NDDB Centre of Analysis for Livestock and Feed, Anand, briefed participants on emerging trends in dairy and food product testing.
Proposed Revisions and New Areas
Dr Rajan Sharma, Joint Director (Research), ICAR-NDRI, presented the institute’s contributions to the development of analytical methods adopted by BIS and FSSAI. He suggested revisions to BIS standards related to ghee, malted milk foods, lactometers and migration test methods, among others.
Expert groups held detailed discussions on methods of analysis for milk and milk products, including butter, ghee, cream and sensory evaluation. Existing standards were examined in the context of international practices, with an aim to harmonise analytical methods.
Key Outcomes
The session resulted in recommendations for revision of existing standards, identification of new areas requiring standard development, and recognition of research gaps that need further scientific work.
The recommendations will guide future efforts by BIS, ICAR-NDRI and partner organisations to ensure that India’s dairy testing standards remain scientifically robust, regulatory-compliant and aligned with global benchmarks.
