Kozhikode, January 9: Calling for urgent policy interventions to strengthen India’s dairy sector, T. Mano Thangaraj, Tamil Nadu Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, on Friday said that despite being the world’s largest milk producer, India still faces a shortfall of nearly 80 million litres of milk per day to meet the nutritional needs of its growing population.

Inaugurating the Southern Dairy and Food Conclave 2026 in Kozhikode, Mr. Thangaraj stressed the need for strong political will and farmer-centric policies to enhance dairy production. He underlined that dairy farmers must be incentivised more than multinational companies operating in the sector. Highlighting the sector’s global potential, he said the dairy industry could significantly contribute to national GDP growth.
“The younger generation should be encouraged through easy loans, skill development programmes, and infrastructure support to become dairy entrepreneurs. Once dairy develops, allied sectors will naturally follow,” he added.
Earlier, the conclave was jointly inaugurated by Mr. Thangaraj along with Kerala Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J. Chinchurani, Andhra Pradesh Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, and Puducherry Minister C. Djeacoumar.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Chinchurani said Kerala was fast moving towards self-sufficiency in milk production. She noted that the Malabar region under Milma was particularly recognised for the quality of its milk. “Kerala ranks second only to Punjab in terms of milk productivity, and production has increased by 14% over the past four years,” she said.
The event was presided over by Indian Dairy Association (IDA) president Sudhir Kumar Singh. IDA South Zone chairman Satish Kulkarni and Milma chairman K.S. Mani were also present. Awards recognising outstanding contributions by dairy professionals were presented during the programme.
Organised by the IDA, the conclave features technical sessions on key aspects of dairy development. Experts addressing the sessions include Amit Vyas, Managing Director of Amul; R.S. Matche, Chief Scientist at the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Vellore; Sosamma Iype of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Mannuthy; K.N. Dhanya, Regional Director of FSSAI; and Neha Sharma, Director, Tata Consumer Products Limited.
The conclave also includes an exhibition showcasing a wide range of dairy products, emerging dairy technologies, and a unique display of cattle breeds from different parts of the country.
