Party demands immediate rollback, says higher milk prices will put additional pressure on middle-class and low-income households

VIJAYAWADA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest on Sunday at the Krishna District Milk Union, popularly known as Vijaya Dairy, in Vijayawada, opposing the recent increase in milk prices.

CPI(M) leaders demanded that the revised prices be withdrawn immediately, arguing that milk is an essential food item and that any increase directly affects household budgets.

Milk price hike raises concern over household expenses

During the protest, party leaders said the impact of higher milk prices would be particularly significant for middle-class and economically weaker households.

They pointed out that milk is consumed regularly by several vulnerable groups, including children, elderly people and individuals requiring milk as part of their diet during illness.

According to the party, the price increase could therefore have implications beyond ordinary household expenditure, particularly for families that depend on milk as a regular source of nutrition.

CPI(M) threatens wider agitation

CPI(M) leaders said the party would continue its agitation until the price increase was withdrawn.

The party announced plans to involve its women’s, workers’, youth and student organisations in further protests.

The proposed campaign could include signature drives, demonstrations and hunger strikes, if required, according to a party press release.

Dairy pricing debate

The protest comes amid the broader challenge faced by dairy cooperatives of balancing milk procurement prices paid to farmers, processing and distribution costs, and affordable consumer prices.

While higher retail prices can help dairy unions manage rising input and operating costs, consumer groups and political parties often raise concerns over the impact on households, particularly when milk is treated as an essential daily food.

The latest protest at Vijaya Dairy is therefore likely to keep the debate over milk affordability versus dairy-sector economics in focus in Andhra Pradesh.
