DAHD Celebrates National Milk Day 2025, Showcases India’s Progress in Livestock and Dairy Sector

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, celebrated National Milk Day 2025 on 26 November 2025 at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. The event brought together livestock farmers, dairy cooperatives, milk federations, and sector experts from across the country.

The celebration was graced by Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel and Shri George Kurian, Hon’ble Ministers of State, along with Shri Naresh Pal Gangwar, Secretary, DAHD, and senior officials of the department.
Ms. Varsha Joshi, Additional Secretary, DAHD, opened the programme with a welcome address.

Key Highlights of the Event

• Focus on Scientific Advancements
Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar congratulated participants and emphasised the importance of scientific progress—particularly genetic improvement, sex-sorted semen, IVF, and advanced breeding interventions—to drive sustained growth in India’s livestock sector. He also underscored the critical economic role played by dairy cooperatives.

• National Gopal Ratna Awards Presented
Hon’ble Minister of State Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel presented the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards 2025 in three categories:
– Best Dairy Farmer rearing indigenous breeds
– Best Artificial Insemination Technician
– Best Dairy Cooperative Society / Milk Producer Company / Dairy FPO

In his address, he highlighted the growing strength of the Indian dairy sector, noting that India’s per capita milk availability has risen to 485 g/day, surpassing the global average of 329 g/day. He encouraged farmers to continue leading rural economic growth and praised the awardees for their contributions.

• Launch of Key Initiatives
The Hon’ble Minister of State unveiled several important initiatives during the event:

  1. Guidelines for Minimum Standards of Veterinary Infrastructure in India
    • Introduces a uniform, four-tier national framework for veterinary service delivery:
      PVCCs → Block-Level Hospitals → District Hospitals → State-Level Polyclinics/Referral Centres
    • Aimed at strengthening veterinary capacity and improving service quality across States.
  2. Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2025
    • Provides updated, comprehensive livestock-sector data to support policymaking.
  3. Commissioning of 20 Modern Insulated Milk Tankers
    • Flagged off by Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel for Ropar Milk Union under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD)
    • Supported by the JICA-assisted Project – Component B: Dairying through Cooperatives.
  4. Inauguration of 9 Breed Multiplication Farms across various States to enhance availability of high-quality dairy animals.

As part of the ceremony, the Minister also led participants in reading the Preamble of the Constitution, reaffirming the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

• Minister George Kurian’s Address
Shri George Kurian applauded the Gopal Ratna Awardees and emphasized the importance of strengthening veterinary infrastructure and accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as embryo transfer, artificial insemination, and precision livestock practices to boost productivity.

Panel Discussions and Knowledge Sharing

The event featured an engaging panel discussion on “Enhancing Animal Productivity – Experiences of Technical Experts and Progressive Farmers.”
Experts and farmers shared field-level insights, innovative practices, technological adoption, and proven strategies that have delivered measurable improvements in productivity across the dairy and livestock sector.

The celebration not only highlighted India’s remarkable progress in dairying but also served as a national platform to honour the contributions of farmers, cooperatives, and innovators shaping the country’s livestock economy.
