Dairy farmers in Amritsar staged a symbolic protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday by spilling milk on the road to highlight the economic losses they claim are being caused by the open sale of adulterated milk and dairy products in local markets.

The protest was organised by the Amritsar Dhodhi Union, whose members alleged that impure and fake dairy products are being sold at significantly lower prices, making it difficult for genuine dairy farmers to survive financially.
After demonstrating for over an hour, the protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to Dalvinderjit Singh through Tehsildar Hriday Pal.
“Customers See Price, Not Quality”
According to union president Ranjit Singh, the actual production cost of milk currently stands at nearly ₹80 per litre after accounting for:
- cattle feed,
- labour,
- transportation,
- veterinary care,
- and operational expenses.
However, he alleged that sellers using “unauthentic and dubious methods” are openly selling milk at nearly ₹60 per litre.
“Customers compare only prices, and rarely pay attention to quality,” Singh said.
He claimed that cheaper adulterated milk products are capturing the market while genuine producers of pure milk are suffering severe economic losses.
Genuine Dairy Farmers Facing Heavy Losses
Union members said many farmers are often forced to sell unsold milk at reduced prices to avoid spoilage and further financial losses.
Protesters argued that the growing presence of low-cost adulterated products is gradually making dairy farming economically unviable, discouraging even the next generation from continuing in the profession.
They also highlighted the demanding nature of dairy farming, noting that farmers typically begin work as early as 3 am to ensure milk reaches urban markets by morning.

Allegations of Open Sale of Adulterated Products
The union alleged that adulterated milk, cheese, and khoya are being openly sold in several areas of Amritsar, including:
- Ram Tirath Road,
- Chabal Road,
- Hakima Wala Gate,
- Lohgarh Gate,
- and Fatehgarh Churian Road.
Farmers claimed that adulterated khoya and cheese are being sold at around ₹300 per kilogram, while the production cost for genuine dairy producers is approximately ₹500 per kilogram.
According to protesters, this pricing gap is severely impacting legitimate dairy operators who maintain quality standards.
Demand for Strict Action and Public Disclosure
The protesting farmers urged authorities to intensify inspections and take stricter action against adulteration in the dairy sector.
Ranjit Singh also alleged that earlier, the Health Department used to publicly disclose the names of dairy operators whose samples failed quality tests, but such disclosures are no longer being made.
He appealed to the government to once again publicly reveal the identities of violators so consumers could better understand the extent of adulteration in the market.
Dairy Sector Under Growing Pressure
The protest comes at a time when dairy farmers across several Indian states are already facing mounting pressure from:
- rising feed prices,
- transportation costs,
- labour shortages,
- climate-related stress,
- and fluctuating milk procurement rates.
Industry observers say adulteration concerns continue to remain one of the most serious challenges affecting consumer trust and fair pricing in India’s dairy sector.
