Hyderabad, July , 2026: Food safety inspections conducted by the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) have uncovered multiple food safety and hygiene violations at three establishments, including an Instamart warehouse and two restaurants in Hyderabad’s Medchal region. The inspections, carried out on July 3, led to the disposal of expired food products and the identification of several regulatory lapses.

The most significant violations were reported at Kwickbox Retail Private Limited, which operates an Instamart warehouse in Gajularamaram. Officials seized and discarded expired cheese, yoghurt smoothies and paneer during the inspection. The facility was also found storing vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items together, while its cold storage area was described as untidy and poorly organised.
Inspectors noted the absence of mandatory medical fitness certificates for food handlers and observed that inventory management systems such as First In First Out (FIFO) and First Expiry First Out (FEFO) were not being implemented effectively. The warehouse also lacked a designated storage area for expired or damaged food products. The facility received a hygiene score of 76%.
At Old Trees Cafe in Kandlakoya, officials discovered expired sweet sauce and yellow curry paste, both of which were discarded immediately. The inspection further revealed that the establishment did not maintain medical fitness certificates for food handlers or a water quality analysis report required for food preparation. Open dustbins without lids were also observed. The café was assigned a hygiene score of 82%.

More serious deficiencies were identified at Baisakhi Family Dhaba, also located in Kandlakoya. Inspectors found that the restaurant had failed to display its mandatory FSSAI and trade licences. Expired baby corn and black pepper masala were discarded, while records relating to medical fitness, pest control and water quality testing were unavailable.
The inspection team also found the kitchen exposed to the external environment without protective mesh, increasing the risk of contamination. Additional violations included open dustbins, unlabelled semi-prepared food items and the use of synthetic food colours in Chinese dishes, which were immediately discarded.
In one of the most concerning observations, officials found dead flies inside a refrigerator and rusted iron knives being used for food preparation. The knives were discarded, and the management was instructed to replace them with food-grade stainless steel equipment. The restaurant received the lowest hygiene score among the three establishments at 63%.
Food safety experts say the violations point to persistent gaps in food handling and storage practices despite regulatory requirements. The presence of expired dairy products, inadequate cold chain management and poor sanitation can significantly increase the risk of foodborne illnesses. Experts also stress that compliance with FIFO and FEFO inventory systems, regular health screening of food handlers and strict segregation of food products are fundamental to ensuring consumer safety.
The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation stated that inspections will continue across food establishments to enforce compliance with food safety standards and improve hygiene practices in the region.
