Kollam: What began as a dream during years abroad has transformed into a thriving dairy enterprise, as Mini Thomas from Kulathupuzha in Kerala emerges as a successful farmer producing up to 350 litres of milk daily while diversifying income through innovative practices like dried cow dung sales.

A Dream Takes Root
Mini and her husband Reji Thomas, who worked in Kuwait for over two years, always aspired to start an agricultural venture back home. After returning to India, the couple purchased 6.5 acres of fallow land near Madathara and laid the foundation for Golden Hill Valley Farm.
Initially starting with crops like pepper, castor, and cumin, the couple soon ventured into dairy farming. Their breakthrough came when they acquired 15 cows from a closing dairy unit, gradually expanding into a full-fledged farm.
Rapid Growth and Recognition
Within a short span, Mini’s dedication earned her recognition as the Best Dairy Farmer (District Level) by the Dairy Development Department.
Today, the farm houses:
- 60 cattle, including 24 milch animals
- Daily milk production of 300–350 litres
- Annual production of 1.5 lakh litres of milk
Milk is supplied to local dairy units and also sold directly at around ₹56 per litre, ensuring steady income.

Beyond Milk: Smart Income Diversification
The farm’s success is not limited to milk production. Mini has tapped into additional revenue streams:
- Dried cow dung sold at ₹120 per bag
- Integrated farming with pepper, coconut, banana, ginger, turmeric, and cassava
- Fish farming with tilapia and rohu in farm ponds
Cow dung slurry is used as organic fertilizer, creating a sustainable circular farming model.
Focus on Genetics and Technology
A key strength of the farm is its focus on genetic improvement:
- Majority of cattle are Holstein Friesian (HF) breeds
- Use of semen from the Kerala Livestock Development Board ensures high-quality breeding
- Many animals are born and raised on the farm itself
Modern facilities include:
- Automated drinking systems
- Ventilated sheds with fans
- Calf-rearing units
- Regular hoof care management
Employment and Operations
The farm provides livelihood to 12 workers, mostly local residents. Operations begin as early as 3:30 AM, with clearly divided responsibilities ensuring efficiency in both dairy and crop production.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite success, challenges remain:
- Rising feed costs (₹1,500 per sack)
- Disease management
- External threats like wildlife
Mini tackles feed costs strategically by bulk purchasing and storing fodder. Looking ahead, she plans to:
- Establish a modern milk parlour for efficient milking
- Begin sale of pure HF heifers
- Upgrade the farm into a fully high-tech dairy unit
A Model for Rural Entrepreneurship
Mini’s journey reflects resilience, smart planning, and diversification—turning a modest start into a multi-income dairy enterprise. Her story highlights how scientific dairy practices, integrated farming, and entrepreneurial vision can transform rural livelihoods.
