FSSAI Cracks Down on Online Grocery Platforms Over Expiry Date

India’s apex food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has issued a strict warning to major online grocery and food delivery platforms, including Blinkit, Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket, Zepto, and Amazon, over non-compliance with expiry date regulations. The authority flagged concerns after finding that several products listed on these platforms either lacked proper expiry date labels or displayed incomplete information — a clear violation of the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. FSSAI has warned quick-commerce and e-commerce platforms like Zomato, Blinkit, and Amazon to comply with expiry date rules, ensuring food items have at least 45 days shelf life before delivery.

This enforcement drive follows routine inspections and rising consumer complaints about misleading or missing product expiry information, particularly on perishable categories like dairy, packaged food, and ready-to-eat items. FSSAI has directed these companies to immediately rectify their systems and ensure strict adherence to regulatory guidelines. Non-compliance could attract legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

With the rapid growth of quick-commerce and online grocery services in India, ensuring food safety standards — especially for sensitive categories like dairy and fresh produce — has become a growing regulatory priority. The regulator’s move also signals an intention to tighten digital supply chain governance and enhance transparency for online food consumers.

Industry Insight:
For dairy players and FMCG brands selling through digital platforms, this is a timely reminder to actively monitor product listings and expiry label accuracy. It also underlines the growing regulatory focus on e-commerce food safety in India’s fast-expanding online grocery sector.
