A 63-year-old Artificial Insemination (AI) technician from tribal Gujarat has emerged as a standout figure in India’s dairy sector, achieving an exceptional 80% conception success rate in cattle — nearly double the national average.
From Village Roots to Dairy Excellence
Deepak Patel, a resident of Vaheval village in Mahuva taluka of Surat district, has been serving as an AI technician with Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd (popularly known as Sumul Dairy) since 1999.
India’s average AI conception rate ranges between 35–40%, while Sumul Dairy maintains an average of 53% across Surat and Tapi districts. Patel, however, consistently delivers an 80% success rate — the highest reported in the country.
His precision in identifying the optimal heat period before insemination is considered a key factor behind this remarkable performance. In one recent instance, he advised a farmer to delay the procedure by a few hours, ensuring correct timing and improving chances of successful conception.
Economic Impact on Farmers
The implications of an 80% conception rate are significant:
- 80 out of every 100 inseminated animals become pregnant
- Shorter calving intervals
- Increased number of lactating animals
- Higher milk yields
- Lower reproductive costs
For example, if a farmer inseminates 10 buffaloes and 8 conceive, the result is substantially higher herd expansion and milk output compared to the usual 4–5 pregnancies under average success rates.
This has translated into tangible income gains and improved herd quality for farmers in Mahuva taluka.
Surge in Regional Milk Productivity
Data highlighted in a book authored by former Sumul Dairy MD PR Pandey shows that crossbred cows in Mahuva produce an average of 11.2 litres per day, compared to:
- Gujarat average: 8.05 litres/day
- National average: 7.4 litres/day
This productivity gap underscores the long-term genetic and reproductive improvements achieved through effective AI implementation.

Institutional Recognition
Sumul Dairy is one of the 21 district unions functioning under the umbrella of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited, which markets products under the Amul brand.
Patel’s work has also been documented nationally:

- Documentary: “Safal Bijdan”, produced by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for AI technician training
He has received multiple state and national honours and was felicitated by Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah for his contribution to livestock development.
