Himachal Pradesh Signs MoUs with NDDB to Strengthen Dairy Sector, Boost Farmer Income

Shimla, March 17: The Himachal Pradesh government has signed three key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to accelerate the development of the dairy sector and enhance farmers’ income.

Himachal Pradesh Signs MoUs with NDDB to Strengthen Dairy Sector, Boost Farmer Income

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the agreements mark a significant step toward strengthening the rural economy and ensuring better returns for milk producers across the state.

Focus on Infrastructure and Procurement

The MoUs aim to improve dairy infrastructure and streamline milk procurement systems. Key initiatives include:

  • Establishment of two milk processing plants (20,000 litres/day each) at Nahan (Sirmaur) and Nalagarh (Solan)
  • Setting up of two milk chilling centres (20,000 litres/day each) at Jalari (Hamirpur) and Jhalera (Una)

Additionally, a modern, fully automated milk processing plant is under construction at Dhagwar (Kangra district) at a cost of ₹250 crore. The plant will initially process 1.5 lakh litres per day, expandable to 3 lakh litres.

Formation of Kangra Milk Union

One of the agreements focuses on forming the Kangra Milk Union, which will cover Kangra, Una, Hamirpur, and Chamba districts. This is expected to significantly improve milk collection, processing, and marketing in the region.

Boost to ‘Him’ Brand

With enhanced processing capacity, the state plans to expand its dairy product line under the ‘Him’ brand. Officials believe improved quality and branding will help Himachal compete with established national dairy brands.

Higher Milk Procurement Prices

In a major relief to farmers, the state has increased support prices:

  • Cow milk: ₹32 → ₹51 per litre
  • Buffalo milk: ₹47 → ₹61 per litre

The Chief Minister stated that Himachal Pradesh is now offering one of the highest procurement prices in the country, directly benefiting dairy farmers.

Strengthening Rural Economy

Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar emphasized the need to aggressively promote the ‘Him’ brand to compete nationally.

Experts believe these initiatives—combined with NDDB’s technical support—will modernize the dairy sector, create employment, and significantly enhance rural incomes in the coming years.
