Indian Cooperatives Amul, IFFCO Secure Top Spots in Global Rankings

The 13th edition of the World Cooperative Monitor, released in Doha before the World Social Summit, highlights how cooperatives are shaping a more inclusive and sustainable global economy.

According to the report, the world’s top 300 cooperatives and mutual enterprises had a combined turnover of USD 2.79 trillion in 2023. From India, IFFCO and Amul (GCMMF) once again ranked among the global leaders — especially when measured by turnover relative to GDP per capita. This shows the growing strength of India’s cooperative model even in times of global uncertainty.

IFFCO continues to empower millions of farmers through sustainable fertilizer production, digital tools, and eco-friendly projects, reinvesting its profits into rural development and green initiatives.

Amul, on the other hand, stands out as a symbol of rural empowerment and self-reliance, improving the lives of millions of dairy farmers while strengthening India’s food security.

Globally, agriculture and insurance cooperatives dominate the sector, contributing 35.7% and 31.7% of total turnover respectively, followed by wholesale and retail trade at 18%. Leading international cooperatives include Groupe Crédit Agricole (France), State Farm (USA), and REWE Group (Germany).

The report also notes that cooperatives from emerging economies like India are quickly catching up through innovation and digital transformation.

ICA Director General Jeroen Douglas said the findings prove that cooperatives are not only vital to local economies but also play a key role in solving global challenges.

The World Cooperative Monitor 2025 introduces the new global strategy “Practice, Promote, Protect (2026–2030)”, which focuses on advancing sustainability, social justice, and economic democracy worldwide.

The report also features interviews with cooperative leaders from around the world, showing how cooperatives are tackling major global issues — including food security, climate change, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion. These real-life examples highlight that cooperatives provide a fair, community-focused alternative to profit-driven business models.

Gianluca Salvatori, Secretary General of EURICSE, emphasized that cooperatives are especially suited to lead the world through major transitions. He said, “Cooperatives show that innovation can go hand in hand with fairness, inclusion, and democratic governance. Their role is not just socially important but strategically vital for a sustainable future.”

As the world celebrates the UN International Year of Cooperatives, the report reaffirms that the cooperative spirit — seen in organizations like IFFCO and Amul — continues to drive inclusive growth and resilience. From rural communities in India to the global stage, cooperatives are proving that collective action remains one of the most powerful forces for positive change
