New Delhi, Jan 9, 2026: India’s dairy industry — the world’s largest milk producer — is undergoing a sweeping digital transformation, led by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and empowered by government partnerships. The shift, anchored in a suite of technology-driven initiatives, is designed to enhance transparency, operational efficiency, and farmer welfare across the dairy value chain.

At the heart of this transformation is the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), which has so far issued **Pashu Aadhaar digital IDs to over 35.68 crore livestock. The move is part of a broader strategy to create a unified digital livestock ecosystem under the “Bharat Pashudhan” platform. The database has already recorded more than 84 crore animal service transactions, tracking vaccinations, breeding, artificial insemination, and treatments at the individual animal level.
Field veterinarians and extension workers are supporting farmers in adopting the system in rural areas, while the 1962 mobile app and toll-free helpline connect farmers to veterinary advisory services and government schemes, further expanding access to digital resources.
Digitised Milk Procurement Enhances Trust and Transparency
To streamline milk collection and ensure fair dealings at the grassroots, the NDDB has rolled out the Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) across cooperative societies. The system digitally logs milk quantity, quality, and fat content, enabling instant payments directly to farmers’ bank accounts and automated SMS updates on transactions.
As of October 2025:
- AMCS is live in 12 states and Union Territories
- Covers over 26,000 dairy cooperative societies
- Benefits 17.3 lakh milk producers across 54 milk unions
- More than 2.43 lakh farmers are registered on the AMCS mobile platform
The multilingual system features desktop applications, centralized monitoring portals, and mobile apps tailored for farmers, secretaries, and supervisors, strengthening real-time visibility into milk procurement.
Integrated Digital Platforms Drive Data and Decision Making
The NDDB has also launched the NDDB Dairy Enterprise Resource Planning (NDERP) system — a comprehensive, open-source ERP platform built on ERPNext. Designed specifically for dairy and edible oil industries, NDERP integrates finance, procurement, inventory, sales, HR, and manufacturing into a single digital ecosystem.
Key advantages of NDERP include:
- Unified dashboards for data-driven decision-making
- No proprietary software costs
- Seamless integration with AMCS
- Additional distributor-focused modules (iNDERP and mNDERP) for order management, billing, and payments
The result is a “cow-to-consumer” digital architecture that enhances traceability and supply chain coherence.

Advanced Systems Strengthen Genetic Infrastructure and Sector Intelligence
With support from the World Bank-funded National Dairy Plan-I, the NDDB has implemented the Semen Station Management System (SSMS) across 38 graded semen stations nationwide. The digital solution strengthens traceability, maintains compliance with government standard operating procedures, and ensures robust biosecurity protocols in artificial insemination operations.
Meanwhile, the Internet-Based Dairy Information System (i-DIS) has emerged as the data backbone for the cooperative sector. The platform now serves:
- 198 milk unions
- 15 federations
- 29 marketing dairies
- 54 cattle-feed plants
i-DIS supports performance monitoring, benchmarking, and strategic planning, with ongoing capacity-building workshops helping cooperative officials harness data analytics for policy formulation.
Smart Logistics Reduce Costs and Improve Delivery
In an effort to modernize logistics, the NDDB has introduced GIS-based milk route optimisation, replacing manual route planning with dynamic, data-powered systems. Pilot projects in regions such as Vidarbha-Marathwada, Varanasi, Assam, Jharkhand, and Indore have already delivered measurable reductions in transport distances, fuel consumption, and logistics costs.
Through a free web-based route planning tool, dairy cooperatives nationwide can now dynamically optimize fleet routes in real time, boosting efficiency from collection sheds to processing units.
Future Outlook: Sustained Growth Through Technology
With digital technologies now embedded across livestock management, milk procurement, processing, and logistics, India’s dairy sector is positioning itself for sustainable growth and strengthened cooperative resilience. Industry experts say the focus on transparency and farmer empowerment is expected to not only solidify India’s leadership in global milk production, but also enhance livelihoods and consumer trust.
As the sector continues to embrace digital innovation, the dairy ecosystem — from farmers to cooperatives to consumers — is benefiting from smarter decision-making, better resource utilization, and more reliable market participation.
