Jaipur Farmers Mock Government With ‘M20, M50, M100’ Milk Blends, Protest Rising Adulteration Crisis

Jaipur, June 26: In a striking symbolic protest, dairy farmers in Jaipur introduced “M20”, “M50”, and “M100” milk blends—modeled after ethanol-blended fuel categories—to highlight what they describe as the growing menace of milk adulteration and the deteriorating condition of India’s dairy sector.

Drawing inspiration from the government’s ethanol-mixing program for petrol, protesting farmers mixed varying proportions of water with milk and showcased the products as a satirical commentary on what they allege is widespread adulteration in the dairy market. The demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to the challenges faced by genuine milk producers who claim they are losing income due to the proliferation of cheaper, adulterated milk and dairy products.

Farmers Allege Market Distortion

Farmer representatives said the sale of fake or diluted milk products at lower prices has severely impacted their earnings. According to them, legitimate dairy farmers are struggling to secure fair prices for their produce while facing rising production costs.

“The cost of cattle feed, fodder, veterinary care, and transportation has increased substantially, but milk procurement prices have not kept pace,” said a farmer leader participating in the protest.

The demonstrators further alleged that adulterated milk products, often prepared using harmful substitutes and synthetic ingredients, are finding their way into local markets, posing risks not only to dairy farmers but also to consumers.

Farmers Allege Market Distortion

The Jaipur agitation follows similar protests by dairy farmers in Amritsar, where hundreds of litres of milk were poured onto roads in protest against what farmers described as inadequate action by authorities against milk adulteration.

Farmer unions argue that weak enforcement mechanisms and insufficient market oversight have allowed counterfeit dairy products to flourish, undermining confidence in the sector.

Demands

The protesting farmers have called on authorities to:

  • Launch strict enforcement drives against producers and distributors of adulterated milk.
  • Increase milk procurement prices to reflect rising input costs.
  • Strengthen quality monitoring and testing mechanisms in dairy supply chains.
  • Provide policy support to protect genuine dairy producers from unfair competition.

The protesters warned that larger demonstrations could follow if their demands are not addressed.

A Dual Challenge of Food Safety and Farmer Welfare

Agricultural economists and dairy sector experts note that the issue extends beyond farmer incomes and touches on public health concerns.

Experts argue that milk adulteration not only depresses prices for legitimate producers but can also expose consumers to unsafe products. They emphasize the need for stronger regulatory oversight, improved testing infrastructure, and greater traceability across dairy supply chains.

India remains the world’s largest milk producer, and specialists warn that sustained adulteration concerns could erode consumer trust in the dairy ecosystem while placing additional pressure on small and marginal dairy farmers who form the backbone of the industry.

As the debate intensifies, the Jaipur protest has drawn attention to the intersection of food safety, market regulation, and rural livelihoods—issues likely to remain central to discussions on India’s dairy sector in the coming months.
