Gujarat | A six-member delegation from Kerala led by Dairy Development, Milk Cooperatives and Animal Husbandry Minister Bindhu Krishna visited Banas Dairy in Palanpur to study its cooperative dairy model and explore practices that could be adapted to Kerala.
During the visit, the delegation toured Banas Dairy’s facilities at Badarpura and reviewed key aspects of its operations, including milk collection, processing, product diversification and manufacturing systems.
Focus on the cooperative value chain
The delegation examined how Banas Dairy links milk producers with organised markets and studied the systems supporting farmer participation in milk procurement and cooperative administration.
The team also reviewed aspects of dairy-product distribution and value addition, areas that can influence both farmer returns and the sustainability of cooperative dairy organisations.

Minister Bindhu Krishna described Banas Dairy as an “excellent and replicable model”, while noting that Kerala would examine practices that could be adapted to the state’s own dairy sector and institutional requirements.
Lessons for Kerala’s dairy sector
The visit forms part of Kerala’s efforts to strengthen its milk cooperative system, dairy infrastructure and farmer-market linkages.
Rather than replicating the Gujarat model directly, the delegation is expected to assess which elements of Banas Dairy’s approach—including procurement systems, processing infrastructure, cooperative participation and product diversification—could be relevant to Kerala’s dairy ecosystem.
The study visit also highlights the growing interest among states in strengthening dairy cooperatives through efficient milk collection, modern processing, value-added products and stronger producer-market connections.
