Montreal, Canada: Global dairy giant Lactalis is set to further strengthen its presence in the Canadian cheese market through the acquisition of Agropur Co-operative’s fine cheese division and associated import activities, the company announced.
Lactalis Canada, the parent company of well-known brands including Cracker Barrel, said the transaction will enhance its portfolio of specialty and everyday cheese offerings in Canada.
The acquisition will add Agropur’s fine cheese assets to Lactalis Canada’s existing lineup of brands, which includes Galbani, Président, Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond, and P’tit Québec.
As part of the agreement, Lactalis will acquire two production facilities located in Oka and Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, and integrate approximately 400 employees into its Canadian operations.
Emmanuel Besnier, Chairman of the Lactalis Group, said the acquisition presents an opportunity to build upon Quebec’s established cheese heritage while reinforcing the company’s position in one of North America’s key dairy markets.

“This acquisition represents an opportunity to build on flagship Quebec brands and strengthen our position in the Canadian market,” Besnier said in a statement.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition remains subject to customary closing conditions and approval from Canada’s Competition Bureau.
The deal marks another significant expansion by Lactalis in Canada, following its acquisition of Kraft Heinz Canada’s natural cheese business for $1.62 billion in 2019. That transaction brought several iconic cheese brands under Lactalis’ umbrella and cemented its position as one of Canada’s largest dairy processors.
Industry analysts view the latest acquisition as part of a broader trend of consolidation within the global dairy industry, particularly in the premium and specialty cheese segment, where consumer demand continues to grow.
Agropur’s fine cheese business has long been recognized for its artisanal and specialty offerings, particularly those rooted in Quebec’s rich cheesemaking tradition. The addition of the Oka and Saint-Hyacinthe facilities is expected to expand Lactalis Canada’s production capabilities while preserving established regional brands.
The acquisition also underscores the strategic importance of value-added dairy products in mature markets such as Canada, where processors are increasingly focusing on premium categories to drive growth and profitability.
For Lactalis, the world’s largest dairy company by revenue, the transaction further strengthens its footprint in Canada and reinforces its long-term strategy of expanding through acquisitions in key international markets.
As regulatory approvals proceed, industry stakeholders will be watching closely to assess the impact of the deal on competition, consumer choice, and the evolving landscape of Canada’s dairy sector.
