Mumbai: South Mumbai’s iconic Parsi Dairy Farm has resumed operations after remaining closed for nearly two weeks following the suspension of its Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence over alleged food safety and hygiene violations.
The century-old dairy, renowned for its traditional milk products, sweets, and ice cream, reopened after complying with the requirements laid down by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to sources.
The temporary closure followed an inspection conducted by the Maharashtra FDA at the dairy’s manufacturing facility on July 14, during which officials reported multiple alleged violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.
Based on the inspection findings, the FDA suspended the establishment’s FSSAI licence on July 15, directing the dairy to immediately cease the manufacturing, storage, sale, and distribution of food products until further orders.
Food Safety Concerns
In its earlier statement, the FDA said the observed deficiencies had the potential to cause microbiological contamination of food products, posing a significant risk to public health.
The regulatory authority warned that any operations carried out during the suspension period would attract legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The inspection was part of a wider statewide food safety enforcement campaign launched under the leadership of Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, targeting adulterated, unsafe, and non-compliant food businesses across the state.
Operations Resume
Following the implementation of the prescribed corrective measures and completion of the required compliance procedures, Parsi Dairy Farm has now been permitted to resume business.
While authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific corrective actions undertaken by the establishment, sources indicated that the dairy fulfilled the regulatory requirements necessary for restoration of its licence.
A Mumbai Institution
Established more than 110 years ago, Parsi Dairy Farm is among Mumbai’s oldest and most respected dairy brands. The heritage establishment is widely known for its premium milk, traditional dairy products, handcrafted sweets, kulfi, and ice cream, serving generations of customers across the city.
Its temporary closure had drawn widespread public attention due to the brand’s longstanding reputation and historical significance.
Regulatory Focus on Food Safety
The incident highlights the increasing emphasis being placed by food safety regulators on strict compliance with hygiene, manufacturing, and quality standards, irrespective of the age or reputation of an establishment.
Food safety experts note that periodic inspections and enforcement actions are intended to strengthen consumer confidence by ensuring that all food businesses comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act and maintain safe manufacturing practices.
The reopening of Parsi Dairy Farm marks the conclusion of the regulatory action, allowing one of Mumbai’s most iconic dairy establishments to resume serving customers while operating under restored food safety compliance.
