Maharashtra Announces Relief for Exporters and Cuts Power Tariffs for Dairy Sector

The government of Maharashtra has announced two major measures to support agriculture exports and the dairy sector: financial relief for exporters at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and a significant reduction in electricity tariffs for milk collection centres across the state.

Maharashtra Announces Relief for Exporters and Cuts Power Tariffs for Dairy Sector

Relief for Fruit and Vegetable Exporters

State Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal said exporters facing delays due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East will receive several concessions at JNPA.

Key relief measures include:

  • 80% discount on electricity connection charges for reefer (refrigerated) containers
  • 100% waiver of storage and dwell time charges
  • Permission to store containers at port premises until a new shipping vessel becomes available

These concessions apply from February 28 to March 14, 2026.

According to officials:

  • About 250 containers are stranded at JNPA
  • Around 150 containers are stuck at Mundra Port

Without the waiver, exporters would have faced additional costs of nearly ₹2 lakh per container every seven days.

The relief package followed intervention by the Union government after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis requested support from Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Piyush Goyal.

Major Electricity Tariff Cut for Dairy Sector

The state government also announced a sharp reduction in electricity tariffs for milk chilling and collection centres, which are critical for maintaining milk quality.

The new tariff structure was introduced by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and will be effective from July 1.

New Power Tariffs

  • Low Tension (LT) Commercial:
    • Reduced from ₹16.55/unit → ₹7.31/unit
  • High Tension (HT) Commercial:
    • Reduced from ₹13.81/unit → ₹9.06/unit

This step is expected to significantly reduce operational costs for milk collection centres that use chillers to maintain milk temperature before processing.

Solar Power Integration for Farmers

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also highlighted the success of the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana, which aims to provide reliable daytime electricity to farmers using solar energy.

Key achievements include:

  • 4,000 MW solar capacity already installed
  • 8 lakh farmers receiving daytime electricity
  • 10,000 MW additional capacity planned by year-end

The initiative has been recognised by the International Solar Alliance as a model scheme.

The government aims to ensure 10 hours of uninterrupted daytime electricity for farmers and plans to expand battery storage systems to improve power reliability.
